Starting A Personal Training Business

by Scott Everson In-Home Personal Trainer
Starting a personal training business didn't come naturally for me, in fact, it took about 33 years before I fell into that career path. My guidance councillor in high school once told me that I look like I should be an accountant. I used to work a government job in telecom. It was a passionless position, with very little upside and absolutely no satisfaction from the job itself. It probably goes without mentioning that it was time for a big change. I just wish it hadn't taken so long and so many unhappy purposeless years for me to realize it. My girlfriend at the time was trying to convince me to move to Winnipeg to be with her. At first, it seemed ludicrous to just pack up and leave a stable government job but at the same time, it made all the sense in the world. So, that's exactly what happended - I packed up and left for new horizons. People in the office couldn't believe it and even tried to discourage leaving but I knew that once that bridge was crossed there was no going back.

After the move, I no longer had a job and no real prospects. I had no idea what I wanted to do. It took a lot of thought and consideration. I asked myself, what could I realistically do where I'd be my own boss and I could help others at the same time? The only thing that ever came to mind was my enthusiasm and passion for fitness and exercise. I didn't have any certifications but I knew the basics for how a beginner can start working out at the gym. One day, I was driving by a fitness boot camp in a park nearby and I thought to myself, "I could do that". It was kind of in a non serious way but the idea took hold and festered until I had to act on it. And the rest is history! The boot camp was so successful that I ended up selling it just a year later and moved to Toronto as my girlfriend got a secure position there for work.

Personal Training - The Best Choice

Fitness and personal training Toronto was a whole different ball game than trying to start something in a small city. There was a lot of competition but I learned some of the key aspects to being noticed on Google. I used this knowledge to create my own personal training business named Busy Bee Fitness Experts and learned to rank high for trainers. It literally took years to learn how to go about this but it seemed rather easy as an after thought. That's not to say it's easy to do so but once you have the knowledge it's all pretty straightforward. I worked at a gym and met a good group of personal trainers that were willing to take some work on the side. And voila - a team of experts was assembled.

Having a personal training operation is a heck of a lot more satisfying than being buried in paperwork and hunched over a desk. Every day we get to help people overcome diabetes, lose weight, train prenatal, overcome cardiovascular disease and a whole host of other challenges in order to better themselves. It's not for everyone and to each their own but that's how I feel about it. Going to the gym is a lot easier said than done and doesn't have the same element as doing in-home training. This has been a great opportunity to truly help people, not only get fit and healthier but to increase their confidence and sense of self-worth. In retrospect, I realize that it took a lot of courage on my part to leave security and step outside of my comfort zone. I think that that's what I'm helping clients do every day and it's the most rewarding experience of my life. Not bad for a pencil pusher!

Don't Be Afraid To Ask For Help

Many people at the top will tell you that they've never met a leader that's declined someone who has sought their advice. If they do, they aren't a real leader. Don't be afraid to ask a successful entrepreneur or person in your field as to how they achieved what they have. For more information on how to start your own rewarding personal training career, please reach out and I'd be happy to answer your questions. It takes an approach from many different angles to be successful in this field. Learning the ropes isn't the hard part, it's putting in the work that needs to be done.
