Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker; What Could’ve Been?

by John Smith Freelancer

The mega disappointment, Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker Episode 9, was a difficult movie to watch the first time. A second viewing takes guts. The confusion around Palpatine’s mysterious return is still baffling fans the world over. And that’s the only explanation provided for so much going on at the same time.

Not everyone hated it, though, there was an active part of the fans and audiences that were okay with what was happening. But fans that did not agree aren’t going to keep quiet. After all, this is one of the most coveted fandoms in pop culture history. And fan edits, have been a constant companion for Star Wars fandom since time immemorial. Remember, Phantom Cut edit of the prequel trilogy? Yeah, Rise of Skywalker isn’t getting saved.

Many things irked the viewers. For instance, in a highlighted moment of the film, when Rey is on the brink of death, she hears the voices of all the past Jedi. (including some deep cuts from the animated series) Had the Jedi turned up physically as Force Ghosts, the full impact of the scene and significance could’ve been captured much better.

There are fan edits available on YouTube which encompass this beautifully. One, made by user ‘jon h’ shows an edited version of the finale fight between Palpatine and Rey. The scene includes Luke Skywalker, Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda appear as Force spirits. This could be the ending we all wanted but never got.

This could’ve been the finale of finales, as it was the closing sequence of a nine-movie epic. The opportunity was right there, and the makers missed it. Although, to their disadvantage, Star Wars has always struggled with using CG to bring back deceased actors on screen.

Was the original plan going somewhere else?

There exists another version of the ninth episode which was scrapped by the makers. Called, Duel of the Fates, in this alternate ending, Rey meets many deceased Jedi on an astral plane, the plane was even depicted in a concept art dump. But sadly that film remains unmade.

Although it did have Kylo Ren as the main antagonist, some fans would agree that he was a better choice for a finale of finales. He was also left with the exact amount of anger needed. But as everyone knows and wishes they didn’t, Palpatine returned.
