Stand up comedy shows

A Serious World of Comedy

There is a lot going on in the world these days. And not each of those things is necessarily a good one. But the world has always been like that. There have always been some or the other things which could disturb us. But one has to live despite of all that. Sometimes all we can do is to just focus on what is good. And sometimes you just have to laugh it off. But the most important thing is to stay happy. One cannot end wars without initiating for peace. Similarly one cannot get rid of grief without introducing happiness.

There are some artists who constantly work on something like that. They would either mock on whatever is wrong in a funny with the world or talk about the things that make people laugh. These are the standup comedians who would perform in various clubs and restaurants or any platforms they get a chance on. Standup comedy was not very famous in India previously. During 80s standup comedy shows used to occur in elite restaurants of metro cities or some big functions. The emergence of standup took place with the introduction of television in India. Comedians like Jaspal Bhatti, Johnny Lever and many others who used to perform locally got famous. Some comedians who were able to manage getting funds started their own shows while others continued struggling. Some even took a ticket to Bollywood and made their career in that industry.

Along with this, there was a community which got interested in the English style of standup comedy. This clan of comedians used to perform at clubs, bars and restaurants. As opposed to comedians earlier, this class began to perform using English as their primary language. These comedians mainly performed in the cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai. As a matter of fact, when it comes to standup comedy Mumbai and Bangalore are some of the biggest markets in India.

Now with the introduction of international TV channels and primarily internet, people started taking standup comedy seriously. Some began to consider this as career option. This also happened when people got exposed to the lives of standup comedians like George Carley and recent ones like Russell Peters. There are some like Woody Allen, Robin Williams, Adam Sandler and Chris Rock who made it so big in Hollywood that it is almost unimaginable.

YouTube became a very huge platform for the performers who just started off their careers as standup comedians. This also encouraged others who until now couldn’t even think about considering this field as a career option. But still as of today, standup comedians are having a hard time in a pseudo independent country like India. We generally hear a lot of oppositions from the people against these performers and the comments they make on political parties or any famous personalities.

People need to understand that comedians do comedy. They make funny comments which are not personal but just meant for some light hearted moments. They never have an intention of hurting some one’s feelings.
