Stainless steel sheet types
by Rich B. Blogger By ProfessionThe chemical make-up of both Stainless
steel grade 316 Stainless
Steel Sheet and grade 304 includes chromium and nickel as alloying
materials. Chromium, when added to various stainless steel grades tends to
enhance the general corrosion resistance properties, specifically speaking the
resistance to oxidation for that particular alloy. This corrosion resistance
property of grade 316 stainless steel plate is attributed to the
self-healing passivated oxide layer formed on the surface of the alloy. When
the chromium present on the surface of the sheet reacts with atmospheric
oxygen, it leads to the formation of the
fore mentioned passivated oxide layer.
On the other hand, by adding nickel to the
alloy, properties such as impact strength or toughness as well a resistance to
both corrosion and resistance to oxidation, especially in the presence of
chromium get enhanced. Another benefit of including nickel as an alloyant in
the manufacture of Stainless Steel Sheet is that the metals
tensile strength properties are maintained even when the alloy has been exposed
to either high temperature or low temperature settings. Molybdenum added in
stainless steel grade 316 improves pitting resistance.
