Spider Vein Treatment: A Primer
Edison NJ has become a hot spot for spider and varicose vein treatments. You can find a high quality vein treatment center in Edison NJ with some due diligence. However, its important to understand best practices for the elimination of spider veins.

What are Spider Veins?

Telangiectasias (or spider veins) are leg veins that are less than 1mm and non-bulging. Treatment options for spider veins include sclerotherapy and laser treatment. Of course, treatment is best done after addressing any underlying areas of reflux in larger diameter varicose veins or truncal veins by a qualified vein doctor.

In the management of spider veins, the decision rests between injection of sclerotherapy or laser therapy. Sclerotherapy is favored when the vessels can be visualized with ease for cannulation, whereas laser vein treatment for spider veins in Edison is best for spider veins on the legs difficult to cannulate due to size. Areas of matting are also likely to better approached by laser treatment.

Sclerotherapy
When treating spider veins on the legs with sclerotherapy, the vein doctor should follow simple easy to remember points: 1. Go slow with injection to minimize extravasation, 2. Use the minimal sclerosant concentration to minimize staining, and 3. Use the least amount of volume for effect. With polidocanol, spider veins are treated with a concentration of 0.25% to 0.5% ideally.

Post cosmetic sclerotherapy
Compression therapy is highly recommended by vein specialists after sclerotherapy for spider veins on the legs. The recommended grade is 2 with 20-30mmHg of graded compression worn for 1-2 weeks depending the vein clinic protocol. Repeat treatment is not advised for at least 4-6 weeks in order to assess the response to the previous spider vein treatment session.

With resistant spider veins after treatment, one must consider the possibility of underlying sources of venous insufficiency, feeder veins that could be missed with visual inspection alone, and alternate concentrations of sclerosant. Additionally, one can consider laser treatment with the vein doctor in Edison NJ. It is also recommended to consider Vein lights which provide trans-illumination beyond simple visual inspection. These lights can highlight underlying feeder veins and varicosities that require foam sclerotherapy.

Laser treatment of spider veins:
Best utilized for small superficial spider veins that are difficult to cannulate for sclerotherapy. Laser has not been as effective for reticular veins or varicose veins due to poor penetration at the skin level. In these instances, it is not uncommon to employ both techniques for elimination of spider veins.

Post treatment recommendations are similar to sclerotherapy, however re-treatment is not indicated for 8-12 weeks to minimize risks of inflammatory reactions.
