Space Settlement Southwestern Semi-Final Competition

by Space Set

Since decades space agencies around the globe have been working on the idea of developing means and ways of expanding humanity into the outer space. This has lead to popularity of space travel among masses leading to students exploring space industry as a career option. Encouraging more and more young minds to STEM careers is a way to make this happen.

Space Settlement Design Competitions have been encouraging students from all over the US and the globe towards studying sciences and engineering since last three decades. SpaceSet, as it is popularly known, is an industry simulation competition for high school students. The competition format makes students work as professionals in a space company that is applying to a tender to build a colony in space for human habitation. With quarter-finals and semi-finals happening around different regions of the world, its final take place at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA.

The competition witnesses maximum participation from school teams from all around the United States. The US is divided in different regions. Schools from these regions compete within the region to reach the semi-finals in which the best American teams are chosen to participate in the annual international finals with participants from across the globe.

Southwestern semi-final SSD Competition is meant for school teams from the American southwest. The Southwestern semi-final SSD is fed by quarter final that takes place among teams within cities.

Working with teams through online media, Space Settlement Design competitions just now concluded the Southwestern Semi-final SSDC competition. Teams collaborated remotely and were mentored by engineers and real space scientists working from home. Students presented their proposals to the judges on video calls and winning team was chosen for the finals.

The annual International Space Settlement Design Competition will take place in the summer 2020 while practicing social distancing. Students and judges will participate in the competition through online platforms and collaborate to create proposals for the ‘Request for Proposal’ shared by the Foundation Society.

Schools that have missed participating in the Southwestern Semi-Final SSD Competition may apply directly for the International Space Settlement Design Competition by submitting proposal for the RFP meant for direct entries. If the proposal can impress judges and if they found the team worthy of participating in the finals, they will invite the students and mentors to represent their schools despite having missed the Southwestern Semi-final SSD Competition.
