Sonic the Hedgehog and Mario the Plumber, the two video-game icons that top every other character out there.

No matter when you were born, if you like video games then you know at least one of them if not both and that’s what makes these characters timeless.

If you’re a gaming aficionado or if you are old enough, then you also know they were rivals, and darn good ones at being so – but they became friends…

Enter the Plumber:

Mario, the Plumber, is Nintendo’s mascot and it was the first one to appear. It had so much success that it survived and became modernized to become the 3D plumber we know today.

Back in those days, the character was a pixel art piece that inspired many to take platform games to other levels, and also made game companies aware that mascots can be huge in this business.

Sonic the Hedgehog:

Back in those early console days, Sega and Nintendo were the two brands to dominate it, and they were pretty big rivals.

Seeing the success that Mario had, Sega came up with the idea to create its own platformer mascot, and thus Sonic was born.

The blue hedgehog was faster than Mario, but it became popular at about the same level, competing with the Italian plumber up until the next paragraph.

Sega & Nintendo:

Nintendo bought Sega, and with it came the blue hedgehog that was rivaling Nintendo’s own mascot.

What this means is that from rivals they became friends, and as such you can see them together in many new Nintendo titles.

However, if you’re a bit like me then you can’t look at them as friends, and they are always rivals in your eyes.

Revive the Grudges: Play Smash Bros!

If you want the rivals fighting like it is supposed to happen, then head on over to the latest Super Mario Smash Bros’ titles and have them whack each other out until you’re satisfied.

You can also just charge a level up and make it a platformer survival round, where you can only throw stuff at one another and jump around until one of you fall off.

One thing is for sure though, Mario vs Sonic are still three words that pack a huge impact in today’s gaming society and we think Nintendo is starting to understand we want them to be bitter opponents until the very end.

That’s my opinion, so let me hear yours down on the comment section.
