The Somnath Temple also known as shiva temple,  somnath mandir,  shiv mandir.  It located in the Prabhas Patan near the port of Veraval in Saurashtra on the west coast of Gujarat. This temple considered to be the first of the 12 jyotirlinga temples of Lord Shiva in India. It is an important pilgrimage and tourist destination of Gujarat. The ancient Hindu temple rebuilt in the Chalukya style of architecture after repeated demolition of this temple in ancient times by several Muslim invaders and the Portuguese. Somnath means "Lord of the Gods", which considered a part of Lord Shiva.

The Arab traveler Al Baruni mentioned it in his travelogue, so that Mahmud Ghaznavi attacked the Somnath temple with his five thousand soldiers in 1024 and completely destroyed the temple by looting its property. During that time, about fifty thousand people were worshiping inside the Somnath temple, Ghaznavi got all the people murdered and ran away with the looted property. After this, Raja Bhima of Gujarat and King Bhoj of Malwa rebuilt it. Shiva Temple demolished for the fifth time when the Delhi Sultanate took over Gujarat in 1297. Mughal emperor Aurangzeb ordered in 1702 that if Hindus worship again in the Somnath temple, it would be completely demolished.  Eventually he again demolished the Shiva Temple in 1706. The Shiva Temple as it stands at present built by the Home Minister of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and dedicated to the nation by the President of India, Shankar Dayal Sharma on December 1, 1995.

The story related to Somnath Temple is very ancient and unique. According to legends, Som or Chandra had arranged his marriage with the seven daughters of King Daksha. It is believed that the Devdwar housed in Agra belongs to the Somnath mandir, which Mahmud Ghaznavi had looted with him.

Situated on the summit of the temple, the Kalash weighs 10 tons and its flag is 27 feet high.

It is the first Jyotirlinga of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India, So after its establishment, the next Jyotirlinga established in Varanasi, Rameswaram and Dwarka. For this reason it considered a great place of worship for Shiva devotees.

The Somnath mandir is open for tourists and devotees from 6 am to 9 pm. So Aarti performed three times in the temple. A large number of devotees gather to witness this amazing aarti. By bus:-

Buses are the best way to get to Somnath, as there are many options available. Somnath surrounded by many small towns which are well connected by both bus services, non-AC as well as luxury AC buses. The cost of air-conditioned buses from Diu to Somnath is Rs 300 per person. Somnath can also be reached by bus from other nearby places like Rajkot, Porbandar and Ahmedabad. By train:-

The nearest railway station from Somnath is Veraval, which is 5 km from Somnath. The station connected to Mumbai, Ahmedabad and other important cities of Gujarat by rail. It runs 14 pairs of trains daily. Apart from this, Veraval station can reached by passenger trains. Therefore from there, one can go to Somnath Temple via taxi.
