I recently became a new mum to my daughter Lucy in November 2012. My best friend also recently gave birth to a lovely little baby girl, Holly in January 2013. I wanted to buy her something gorgeous to say congratulations.

From experience, these are some of the things I’ve learned.  Before I had Lucy, I bought way too much clothes for her, I was a little too  prepared for her arrival.  Looking back, I wasted so much money it was unbelievable. I actually bought sleepsuits and vests from newborn, right upto aged 3 – 6 months. Lucy really didn’t need ½ of this stuff. You get so many presents from friends and family that all you really need is a couple of cute outfits and a blanket or two. Honestly, trust me, don’t go overboard. I wish I had of just bought a couple of luxury personalised outfits with Lucy’s name of them, instead of wasting so much money like I did.

So, when it came to buying presents for my best friend and her baby, I had a better idea of what do give them. Later I found out that my gifts were the best gifts they received, yay, go me. I used my new embroidery machine to handmake some beautiful cotton sleepsuits with Holly’s name on them. I teamed them up with beautiful personalised matching soft cotton bibs. My best friend was so excited. I made a beautiful personalised white fleece blanket with all the important details on it; name, date of birth, weight. It was such a cute present. I gift wrapped these adorable gifts and they put a huge smile on Holly’s mum and dads faces. I was chuffed.

A lot of my friends and family members were also starting their own families and extending their families. I began making beautiful personalized  gifts for their babies.  Gifts such as personalised baby outfits, including  sleep suits, vests, hats, mittens and bibs. Everyone loved them and loved received my gifts.

My advice to anyone looking for a top baby gift is not to buy cutesy pink or blue clothes. The baby will more than liked be inundated with impractical and ill fitting outfits. In some cases, lots of clothes will need to be sent back. In my opinion, a simple, yet luxurious personalised sleep suit or gift for mum is a great idea. A nice pamper gift for mum that includes shampoo and conditioner and some nice soap perhaps.

Although its nice to buy cutesy outfits from your local supermarket like Tescos, Asda or Sainsburys, the chances are someone else will have got the same outfit and the chances are, they might not be the same taste as the babies mum.

I still maintain that the best baby gift is a personalised gift that can be kept as a keepsake or heirloom. Beautiful fleece or cotton blankets with your own special messages on them. Beautiful and affordable sleep suits that are cotton and luxury are one of the best gifts I’ve ever given to anyone. My daughter Lucy is 18 months now and I still make her personalised sleep suits as she loves how soft the cotton is and she looks so cute in them.
