Some facts about exercise induced bronchospasm treatment

by Danis John Business Content Writer
Most of us who want to stay in shape exercise regularly or go for a morning jog. Such activities contribute in building muscles and keeping our immune systems strong and healthy. However, what happens to people suffering from exercise induced asthma or bronchospasm? These are the people who start experiencing an obstruction in the airflow after 10 to 15 minutes of starting to exercise. They would have to opt for exercise induced bronchospasm treatment before they can start participating in strenuous activities again. This is imperative if they want to avoid wheezing, coughing, and other painful symptoms associated with this condition.

Exercise induced asthma can happen when the lungs lose heat and water during exercise; people suffering from asthma are more prone to this condition. While they are exercising, most people breathe more rapidly and usually through the mouth. The air coming in through the mouth is generally cooler and drier than the one coming through the nostrils and this is what triggers the symptoms.

A qualified doctor would be able to diagnose the condition based on the medical history of his patient. As part of the exercise induced bronchospasm treatment, patients are advised to carry their quick relief inhalers with them when they are working out or playing. Doctors often recommend the use of a bronchodilator, about ten to fifteen minutes before a patient starts exercising to help them avoid the bronchospasm symptoms. Warming up before an exercise session and also spending at least 10 minutes cooling down would help people affected with this condition adjust at their own pace and would not cause the symptoms to flare up.

As part of the exercise induced bronchospasm treatment, people with the condition should avoid running outside during winter months; the cold air can otherwise cause the symptoms to appear. In the event they have to, a good practice would be to cover their nose and mouth to ensure that only warm air enters their system. It is also a good idea to participate in activities that require a short burst of energy rather than endurance exercises that are quite likely to cause the symptoms to appear. The symptoms can also be minimized if the person stays hydrated so that there is no dryness in the airway.
