Some behaviors that can help you in balancing with your daily routine and dissertation work!
During my last year of degree program, I debated with the committee members for interpretation of data. The long debate and discussion led the committee members to accept my defending stance for my study. Before, all success, I got only 30 days to complete my 100 pages dissertation. My immediate reaction was to go in mode of crunching time in which I cut myself from my social life and be locked in a room with emergency snacks and lots of coffee or tea to keep me wide awake for the next 30 days. But, I considered my life for these 30 days and got the realization that this approach of crunching time could never be successful. I adapted simple habits to reclaim my health as well as social life while completing my dissertation.
· Making decision to gain most out of your time: It is very easy to be the victim of your own schedule. Many students are required to rearrange all commitments including family ones and jobs. It may appear to you that you are left with no option but cutting down your sleep and other activities for meeting up your deadline. What I did was restructuring of my day while using productive strategies to meet my deadline without cutting any routine and commitments.
· Put your social media and emails on the burner: Digital communication is the significant energy sink in last few decades. Using the emails and social media accounts actually lead you to creating more work for yourself and prioritizing agendas of people. Keep in your that social media along with your emails will wait for you when you are done with your dissertation writing work.
· Break your long term goals into short term: One of the challenges that graduate students may face is their deadlines as they are unsure of what to do during specific week for tracking their work. With the time coming closer, they start working long hours to cope with the work while leading to the exhaustion and producing low quality work.
· Shifting your mindset from your accomplishments: In case your life is dictated by a list of tasks, you will be trying to cope up with your infinite list of tasks and ending up in exhaustion. You must enlist the most important tasks in your list for a couple of days as they will eat your time and days.
· Determine important results you want to gain at the end of your day: Formulate short-term milestones and being clear on accomplishing aspects.
·
Focusing on one task at a
time:
It is a fact that human brain cannot focus on multiple tasks and when you are performing
multitasking, your brain is switching back and forth between two tasks.
