Solo travel to Oman

by Rubi Ahsan Associate S.E.O Consultant

I went to Oman alone for a true reason.

For many people, traveling is best experienced while making memories with friends and family. After the death of Covid, people began to find meaning in their lonesome travels, and solo travel grew to be an even more popular trend. These independent travelers aren't afraid to venture out into the wide world, relying only on their skills and common sense to get them through the difficulties of travel.

The Oman Observer spoke with a few frequent travelers to learn more about the trend and their motivations.

Indian travel content producer NainTara has spent the last five years trekking through the Himalayas.

My passion, which evolved into a career as a travel content creator, necessitates as much travel as possible. I started out traveling alone and have been to many locations.

Traveling alone is, in my opinion, one way to learn about different life experiences. This isn't the only tool, though. Depending on the situation and requirements, I favor traveling by myself, in a small group, and, of course, with my loved ones.

Traveling has calmed me down and given me confidence that I can handle even the most difficult circumstances. I have developed into a much more organized and focused person than I was when I was younger [I partially credit solo traveling for that]. One must be a meticulous planner and better prepared before solo travel.

It's always a good idea to read up on the area thoroughly. The top priority should be keeping everyone safe. Although life itself is a journey, one must first assess the risk involved in it to demonstrate that they are an adventurous person. One might be easily persuaded to embark on solo travel after viewing the images on social media, but as a content creator, I can attest that reality differs greatly from those fanciful images. One must keep in mind that solo travel is relatively expensive, which is a big disadvantage unless one is open to hitchhiking options, as I always prefer and recommend exploring unexplored places.

I think that people have changed and are now more concerned with their happiness because a happy you makes for a happy family and a happy workplace.

I was born with a genetic disposition to travel. Because both of my parents were avid travelers, I began traveling at a young age. Nowadays, social media has so much information available that it's much easier to travel alone than it was 15 years ago.

Going solo teaches you a lot more about who you are. Every time, it's like meeting a completely different person. I never realized how much I would enjoy being alone until I started traveling alone. It's very soulful and liberating. I have so much time to think deeply about numerous issues.

Every time I embark on a solo trip, I am overcome with gratitude and it makes me feel more alive than ever. I'm energized and ready to face any challenge when I get home.

I vehemently reject the notion that people who travel alone are loners. They are, in my opinion, the people who have enough self-love to go above and beyond to realize their dreams.

Planning is crucial when traveling alone as a woman. Additionally, you ought to pack lightly and become familiar with a few basic words in the regional tongues. Whenever I go somewhere, I know my friends and family won't enjoy it as much, so I usually travel alone. When I'm on my own, I also learn to value my friends/family a lot more.

I discovered that, over the past ten years or so, I have traveled most frequently as a "solo traveler," which is unquestionably more frequently than I would have traveled in a group. This leads me to believe that perhaps the term "solo traveler" fits me well.

My first solo trip was probably to Japan in 2006, and it taught me something I probably did not fully appreciate or realize until years later: you don't need to wait on or rely on anyone but yourself to make a trip or a long-held dream of a travel destination happen. Visiting Japan had been a dream of mine since I was a child.

I used this experience to travel to locations like the Great Ocean Road in Australia, the Chernobyl Zone and Pripyat in Ukraine, and the breathtakingly beautiful Caucasus mountains of Tusheti in Georgia. This was a very liberating experience for me, and I've never been afraid to travel alone or without a group of people since. Despite all of these, I do not regard myself as a "loner"; rather, I think of myself as a sociable person who enjoys socializing. I find that traveling alone gives me the freedom to choose my schedule and destinations, as well as the opportunity to meet some wonderful and interesting locals as well as other travelers in the places I go.

More and more people are traveling alone, and I don't think it's unusual to see them since I think the trend is expanding globally. The proliferation of smartphones, which put a wealth of knowledge, resources, and apps at your fingertips, is, in my opinion, the main cause of this. I shouldn't undervalue the influence of social media, particularly Instagram.

My advice to those considering travel is to "have a plan"; a good plan doesn't need to be in-depth and should be adaptable to fill in details as you go; instead, have a big goal or thing you want to do (such as visiting a specific national park or visiting a monument or museum) and fill in the details around that. Plan to spend some of your solo travel time participating in a group activity; for example, go visit family or friends, or sign up for a hike or group tour; as a first-time solo traveler, this will help you feel more comfortable and you'll also get to meet your family or friends. Purchase a local SIM card with data in each location. Keep an open mind, and don't worry if you don't set goals or plans.

An enthusiastic traveler and an educator with a global perspective, Helmi enjoys writing about her experiences and posting them on social media, ideally while sipping coffee.

Solo travel can mean many different things to me. You can start with something as easy as a weekend hike on a trail you have never taken before, a weekend trip to a new city in Europe, or months spent backpacking through Southeast Asia to start a completely new life as an ex-pat in a foreign country. To me, it all started with the last one. I have moved to three different countries by myself, starting with moving to the United States as an 18-year-old and ending in Oman, where I have found my second home.

Solo travel is not the most affordable option because you cannot split hotel or rental car costs with anyone. Today, there are fortunately lots of options, including hitchhiking, using a rail pass, Couchsurfing, other forms of public transportation, or staying in a hostel, all of which I've done successfully.

My recommendation for female solo travelers is to purchase a prepaid phone plan at the airport and bring a power bank to ensure that you can always get in touch with someone in case of emergency. Additionally, be sure to inform loved ones or friends of your travel plans. On the other hand, make an effort to minimize your connection to your regular life. You can always post the pictures and travelogues later. The less time you spend online, the more time you have to engage with locals and other tourists. Who knows, you might even get a ride to the top of an Indonesian volcano on the back of a pickup truck.

Enjoy the small moments and the significant experiences while traveling, and meet new people to share your experiences with because this is the best way to forge new memories and stories that will make solo travel experiences unforgettable. For me, it's always fun to think back on my cross-country road trip from San Francisco to New York, my interrailing journey across seven countries on 19 trains, and my backpacking journey across six countries from Thailand to Malaysia while hitchhiking Iceland's ring road!
