So Many Different SUVs- Which One Is Your Favourite?
Basically, there are mainly two broad categories of SUVs one finds in the automobile industry:
1. 4X2 (Two-Wheel-Drive)
2. 4X4 (Four-Wheel-Drive)
The most basic difference between the two is in their drive systems; in the former case power is transmitted to either the front or rear wheel sets, while a transfer case delivers powers to all four wheels simultaneously in the latter.
Rear Wheel Drive (4x2):
Almost all large 4x2 SUVs are rear-wheel drive as it supports bigger and heavier cars and provides an optimum 50:50 weight distribution. The rear wheels are responsible for propelling the vehicle forward with all its power and front sets perform the steering function. These cars however, are only suitable for pavement driving.
Front Wheel Drive (4x2):
The 1973-78 fuel shortages of U.S. compelled automakers to build smaller cars with engines and transmission bodies placed in the front of the car; the most famous example being that of crossover and compact SUVs like Honda CR-V and Ford Escape models. The front-wheel drive effectively eliminates the driveshaft to the rear wheels.
Four Wheel Drive (4x4):
The unique property that makes 4x4s different from other front and rear two wheel drives are its two-speed transfer case and drive axles that simultaneously transmit the engine power to all the four wheels of the vehicle giving it extra traction and stability for off-road driving. The prominent feature of 4x4s is the transfer case’s facility to drop into lower gear range, allowing the SUV to navigate through rough conditions like uneven, windy trails, heavy snow-covered and dry desert terrains with equal efficiencies. Newer automatic vehicles allow shifting to four wheel drive mode from two wheel driver forms as and when the conditions demand for it.
Whatever SUV one prefers from the above mentioned types, one cannot ignore the classy interiors of the car cleverly intertwined with the powerful engine capacity and additional luxurious features offered in these beastly cars. Apart from SUVs, 4x4 systems are also available in trucks and minivans. Although bespoke options are also presented by automakers, these vehicles more often than not come with hefty price tags.
