SMARTPHONES HAVE MADE US LESS HUMAN- MONTY CHADHA

by Siya Kapoor Content Writer
A few years back we could not even have envisioned this world of smartphones we are living in now. We were extremely satisfied with the basic functions our mobile phones were capable of. Being able to make and receive calls from wireless phones was enough to make us wonder at the new technology. Those simple phones were pretty expensive and most people couldn’t afford keeping a phone. Gradually, with new innovations, the phones became more useful and less expensive. When text messaging came into being, people were absolutely thrilled. To be able to communicate to a person miles away through text messages was considered a feat in itself. With the introduction of internet on mobile phones, people could do things never even thought of.

Now let’s talk about the current times. A phone without an internet connection is not even considered important. The smartphones available in the market today have made things ultra convenient. Gone are the times when we had to open our desktop computers or laptops to send an e-mail. Sending e-mails and messages, making video calls, uploading photos on social media websites, looking up a word in the dictionary, getting information about the world- everything is just a click away. In fact, the aforementioned points are considered as basic utilities of a smartphone. These devices we use are so powerful that all tasks that required efforts earlier have become very simple. The sync services are so useful that once you click a picture from your smartphone and the sync services are activated, that picture would automatically be synced to all other devices of yours through various modes depending on the brand and services you are using.

Apart from highlighting the advantages of the smartphones, the purpose of this article was also to mention how they have impacted our lives negatively. Monty Chadha, an avid user of latest technology himself, very rightly pointed out- “Smartphones have made us less human”. I completely agree with him. He knows the importance of smartphones very well, and yet he says that. Whenever I am at a public place and look around, I see people immersed in their latest phones. It is as if they have been transported to another world altogether. Whenever I go for a social gathering, I see people engrossed in their phones, never bothering to talk to the real person sitting before him/her. Monty Chadha too feels that instead of valuing the person right in front of us, we are busy in our virtual world. For instance, wishing people on social media sites is so common, that the thought of calling an old friend to personally wish him on his birthday doesn’t even strike us. Hence, I feel we lose out on opportunities to make real and human connections because we give too much importance to a non-living thing.

Think about it and I am sure you would agree with me too!
