There are nearly 94 different types of small dog breeds. As dogs are easy to train, they are most popular pets. But if you are deciding to purchase a small breed puppy, do not be misguided by its look or personality. Otherwise you will end up with a dog that does not match your expectation. Small dog breeds does not always have meek personality. This proves that what they lack in size they try to make up in arrogance. This does not go with all small dog breeds as Maltese; a small dog is very friendly. They get along very well with the children and other family members when they grow up with them as puppies. Virtually, all of the small dog breeds make excellent little watchdogs. Whenever they see a stranger entering their turf, they make some sort of noise such as barking or growing. Some of them are highly alert and bark continuously as soon as a stranger is on their property. Generally a small dog breed weighs less than 22 lbs and is shorter than 6 inches. But Chihuahua, smallest of the small weighs only 6 to 10 lbs and stands only 6 to 10 inches tall. Every small dog breeds can be trained quite easily to learn commands.

Most of them shed so little hair that owners have hard time to find pets’ hair in their home. These breeds are mostly suitable for people who are infected by allergies caused by shedding. Small dog maintenance revolves around two things- brushing and vacuuming. Some breeds are maintenance free and needs only occasional brushing and no vacuuming as they do not drop any hair.

You will find Italian grey hound small dogs very affectionate, sensitive and playful. On the other hand, Manchester Terrier dog breeds are very faithful, independent and powerful weighing 6 to 8 pounds. Small dog breeds make awesome pets as they are in search of attention and love. They will automatically cuddle on your lap as soon as you pick them up. They are hungry for companionship and shower you with love when they get your attention.
