Match Preview:
This opening Four Nations contest between England and Samoa promises to
be a brutal encounter, with both sides boasting tremendous size and
strength – both in the forwards and outside backs.
Fittingly James Graham – perhaps the toughest player in the game at present – will captain the Poms into battle on Saturday night in the absence of regular skipper Sean O’Loughlin, who will sit out the match with a quad injury.
Graham is arguably the best forward on the planet right now, winning the Dally M prop of the year award and leading the Canterbury Bulldogs into this year’s NRL decider – where he went on to inadvertently break the cheekbone of English mate Sam Burgess in the opening tackle of the match.
Burgess won’t be a part of the English team after his decision to take up rugby union with Bath, however his brothers Tom and Luke will each feature in this clash against Samoa.
George Burgess was perhaps unlucky not to receive the Clive Churchill Medal in South Sydney’s grand final triumph, and probably would have if not for his brother’s heroics in playing the entire match with a fracture cheekbone and eye socket.
He will start in the front-row alongside Graham, while Tom Burgess will come into the game from the bench. Also on the interchange is current Man of Steel Daryl Clark who could well be one of the players of the tournament if his recent Super League form is anything to go by.
Samoa meanwhile possess plenty of NRL talent spread out across the paddock and will love the physical nature this contest is almost certain to adopt.
Their backline is filled with pace and power, with Joey Leilua and Daniel Vidot forming an impressive right edge for the Samoans, while Tigers flyer Tim Simona will slot into the fullback role.
Ben Roberts and Kyle Stanley start in the halves, while Frank Pritchard will be keen to get one up over his Bulldogs teammate Graham in the middle of the park.
There is no lack of size in the Samoans forward pack, with Sam Tagaetese, David Fa’alogo, Leeson Ah Mau and Josh McGuire all forming a menacing front-line.
Despite the Samoan’s potential, England should have too much for them in this clash if they can reproduce their World Cup form from last year down under.
The Poms to win comfortably after an initial tug-of-war in the middle of the park.
