Six Sigma: A Great Solution

by Flower T. Executive

Six Sigma has become a proven method for organizations and businesses to enhance their performance. There is a gamut of companies that actively engage in Six Sigma including, Caterpillar, Celanese, GE, 3M, Honeywell, Starwood Hotels, Home Depot and Sears.

Why "Sigma"? According to six sigma consultants, the term is a statistical expression that measures how far a process has diverged from “perfection”. The concept behind Six Sigma is that if a business can measure the number of "defects" it has in its process, it can systematically figure out how to remove them and get to "zero defects". To be able to achieve Six Sigma Quality, a business process should reduce its defects to 3.4 defects per 1 million opportunities. This means businesses need to be flawless in implementing their key processes.

Methods:

In essence, there are two key methods to carry out Six Sigma projects. The first method works when you have a problem in an existing process, product, or service with no solution. This method is known as DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control). A newer method is known as DFSS or Design for Six Sigma. The main aim of DFSS is to cultivate a new process, product or service that is free of any defects in the eyes of the client.

Six Sigma certainly looks like it’s here to stay. With its well-defined management structure and roadmaps it is a great step towards developing learning organizations. However, like with all other methodologies, Six Sigma will also grow and mature as it expands into new spheres such as DFSS. As six sigma consultants learn more about the strength of well-planned experiments, the design of experiments will be incorporated into most stages of Six Sigma and not just counted as an advanced tool for optimization and improvement stages.

When trying to implement Sign Sigma tools and techniques into your business processes, you must hire a professional for guidance. A knowledgeable Six Sigma consultant can be brought for strategic planning and execution of complicated processes. There can be several aspects of the process that a consultant will have more knowledge of. Moreover, it makes more sense, and can be more cost effective in the long run, to hire an outsider rather than sending someone from the staff to get the required training. Outsourcing, till the time it has been determined that the Sign Sigma consultant can actually produce what is assured, allows the in-house staff to go on with other essential tasks.
