Horses have forever held a place in the hearts of people everywhere. They dominate stories from every corner of the globe, and embody a variety of mythical beings.  From the Indian Spirit to the fabled Unicorn, horses are a beautiful and timeless symbol of power and mystery.

There is a culture that centers around the care and breeding of horses. This is a group of people that go far beyond the casual horse owners, and take the understanding of lineage and breeding to the next level. Some of the more common breeds often found in America include the American Paint horse, the American Quarter horse, the Appaloosa, Thoroughbred racing horse. These are all fantastic examples of this beautiful animal, but they’re really only the tip of the iceberg when considering rare breeds.

There are some horses that can only be found in small corners of the world, and that sometimes require a lifetime to find and acquire. These horses are cared for in some of the best horse stables in Maryland, and other parts of America. They are highly coveted, and if you ever have the opportunity to see or interact with them- count yourself extremely fortunate.  Keep an eye out for some of the breeds listed below-

Caspian

Until 1965, the Caspian was thought to be extinct. This horse is native to Iran, and has been the subject of art and awe since 3000 B.C.  This is a small lithe horse, that resembles a miniature Arabian.  New efforts are underway to try and preserve this breed, but there are still fewer than five hundred of these horses worldwide.  They have an incredibly hearty demeanor, and there is a strong hope that Caspians will grow in number over the next century.

Suffolk Punch

These are beautiful chestnut workhorses that have lost many of their traditional jobs to mechanical counterparts. They are incredibly muscular and stout, and have a great deal of strength and energy. The Suffolk Punch has dwindled down to fewer than six hundred horses left in the U.S. today. They are now sought after showpieces for both their gorgeous build and sweet and loving nature.

Akhal Teke

If you see one of these horses, you’ll likely never forget them! The Akhal Teke is a very thin and lithe horse with an exceptionally long neck that makes it look rather odd. This horse is famous for its reach and its jumping ability. It predates the Arabian breeds, and has a famous coat that often has a metallic sheen.

Freisian-Appaloosa Mix

This is an extremely rare mixture of markings and temperaments. The Freisian- Appaloosa Mixed breed is what’s known as a “designer breed” of horse. These animals are bred specifically for their markings. This particular mix creates a beautiful speckled design that acts as a stippling pattern of the horse. It leads into solid colors near the haunches and neck. This is another rare horse due to the very specific type of sire and mare required to create it.

Canadian

These horses were brought over from France due to their hearty nature and ability to travel quickly for long distances. The Canadian horses were used during the Civil War, and so many were killed during the fighting that they nearly reached extinction.  They’ve made a slow but sure comeback, and are known for their great personalities.

Shire

These British giants are known as some of the largest work horses in the world. They grow in excess of nineteen hands, and have a powerful build. They are known for their docile temperament and their amazing stamina. These are amazing horses for companionship as well as for work.
