Simple ways to unblock a blocked drain
by Layan Yan blogger.writerDo you have a blocked drain that you want to get rid of? There are many plumbing services out there to help you
unblock a drain, however before you call a plumber out to your home, you can save money by giving it a go yourself and trying these simple methods to
unblock a drain.
Use a vinegar and baking soda solution
A tip from a plumber brisbane is to be wary of products on
the market that claim to unclog a drain by pouring their liquid products down
the drain. This is because they usually contain harsh chemicals which can
corrode pipes and create more plumbing issues for you in the future. An
effective, safe and easy way to unclog a drain is to create a solution using
vinegar and baking soda.
How to create and use the vinegar and baking soda
solution
To create your own drain solution, simply mix one third cup
of vinegar into a cup and pour down the drain immediately. You will see the
combination of these two ingredients begin to bubble and they should do a good
job of clearing away dirt, fats and grease.
Let the solution sit in the drain overnight (or for at least
one hour) and pour hot water down the drain to clear it away. If this simple solution
does not work, you could try a stronger manual solution by using a bent wire
hanger.
Use a bent wire hanger
This method is a tried and true way of unblocking drains. It
is a good method if there is buildup which is catchable such as blocked drains
created by buildup of hair. However, this traditional method of unblocking a
drain can get a little bit messy so it is advised to put on some gloves for hygiene
purposes. All that is needed is a wire hanger for clothes which you do not want
to use anymore so you can bend it in order to reach a blockage and pull it our
of the drain. Take the wire hanger and bend it straight so that it will be able
to fit down the drain, create a little peg like hook on the end so that it can
get a hold of the blockage. Then put the wire down the drain, start spinning it
until you can feel the blockage and try to get hold of the blockage with the
wire by spinning it. Once you believe you have caught some of the blockage pull
it upwards and back out of the drain. You should have been able to pull gunk,
hairs and all kinds of nasty things which had blocked your drain. Be sure to put
the gunk in the trash and wash your hands thoroughly.
Seek professional help
Hopefully these simple methods have helped you unblock a
drain at home and saved you money. However, if the block remains then it may be
time to seek professional help. Get in contact with a local plumber to help you
unblock that stubborn drain.
Have you ever successfully unblocked a drain yourself? And
how did you do it? If you know of a different simple way of unblocking a drain,
it would be great to know in the comments.
