Akshaya Tritiya or
Akha Teej is an annual festival celebrated by Hindus and Jains. The festivity
happens on the third Tithi of Bright Half or Shukla Paksha of Vaisakha month.
The occasion falls in April or May, according to the Gregorian calendar.
Here the word
“Akshaya” means never-ending in terms of prosperity, joy, and success. Tritiya
here refers to the third phase of the moon. The day is considered very
auspicious in Hinduism and Jainism to start any new venture.
Jain Tradition
The founder of Jain
philosophy Lord Rishabhdev is believed to have lived over a million years ago.
In Jainism, the day signifies Lord Rishabhdev ending his one-year austerity. He
is offered sugarcane juice which is poured into his cupped hands.
This festivity is
also known as Varshi Tapa, during which several Jain people observe fast and
visit pilgrimage sites such as Palitana. Some people also observe the year-long
alternative day fasting, which is known as Varshi-tap. These people finish
their Tapasya by doing Parana, and they drink the sugarcane juice.
Hindu Tradition
Similar to Jainism,
in Hinduism, too, the day is considered so auspicious. People prefer to start a
new venture on this day. If they want to make any expensive purchase, they
choose this day. Some people also consider starting investing on this day. It
is also a day to remember those souls who have departed from this world.
The day also holds
significance for women, married or unmarried. Women pray for the man in their
lives or for the future husband. These women then distribute germinating gram,
fresh fruits, and Indian sweets among people. Fasting and serving others on
this day is considered to bring good karma to the individual. The date gets
even more auspicious when it falls on Monday, which signifies Rohini, the star
which denotes prosperity and success.
The Auspicious
Activities that Go Fruitful on Akshaya Tritiya
Since the day is
considered auspicious and it denotes goddess Laxmi, the provider of wealth and
fortune, buying gold and silver on the day always comes fruitful. If a person
invests in gold or silver on the day, it invites wealth to his home.
People also start
new business or venture on the day since any business initiated is bound to
flourish. Grah Pravesham also happens on the day without needing any particular
Muhurta. Cow feeding on the day is also considered very significant since it
develops the power to wash off one’s sins and doshas.
People observe
fasting; they indulge in various religious activities. All these things done on
Akshaya Tritiya multiply the benefit, and people get bestowed by the blessings
of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi.
Let us celebrate
this Akshaya Tritiya with devotion in heart. Perform auspicious activities of
your life on the day and get bestowed with bountiful wealth, prosperity, and
happiness.
Legends Related to
Akshaya Tritiya
The most important
legend related to the day is about the Akshaya Patra. When the princely
Pandavas with their wife Draupadi went into exile, they had to face the lack of
food. There was not enough food to satiate the saintly guests.
Yudhishthira then
did penance to Lord Surya and was bestowed by a bowl. Lord Surya blessed the
bowl to have food till Draupadi had served all her guests. When sage Durvasa
visited, Krishna made this bowl invincible with the power of having food
forever and the food of their choice; hence the bowl was called Akshaya Patram.
On Akshaya Tritiya,
Parasurama is also worshipped who is considered the sixth incarnation of
Vishnu. He is evoked in various Vaishnava temples, and people also call this
day Parasurama Jayanti.
Another legend is
related to Sudama, who visited his childhood friend Lord Krishna on the day and
got blessed by unlimited wealth and joy.
