Should you install epoxy floors for your garage?
by Industrial Flooring AcryliconEpoxy floors are in great demands these days. Epoxy
coatings are tough and durable so epoxy floors do last for a long time. Another
advantage of opting for epoxy floors is it is easy to clean. Epoxy floors also
offer protection against oil, grease. For all these positives, you can consider
epoxy floors for your garage.
However, epoxy floors can’t be installed on all
types of floors. You first have to check the concrete floor of your garage and
see whether it produces moisture. Floors that produce moisture are not ideal
for epoxy floors as the moisture doesn’t let epoxy paint bond well with the
floor. Similarly, concrete floors with sealer application are not conducive to
epoxy floors. In case you want to install epoxy floors on a new slab, you
should wait for at least a month for the slab to be dried. If the floor is
already painted, you should ensure that the old paint is removed before
installing epoxy floors. You should also check the temperature of air in your
garage before you carry out epoxy floors installation. To dry epoxy paint, the
temperature should be in the range of 60 to 90 degree F. And, the temperature
of concrete should be minimum 55 degree F.
The outcome of the process of installing epoxy
floors also depend on your preparation and planning. The preparation part plays
an instrumental role for the best result of your epoxy floors project. The
preparation part consists of removal of oil spot, degreasing and cleaning of
floor, etching of floor with mild acid. The preparation for epoxy floors also
involves in scrubbing, rinsing and vacuuming of floor. After making all these
preparations, you also have to fill up the cracks if there is any. In case,
there is no crack you can go ahead with the process of incorporation of epoxy
floors. After applying the first coat of epoxy paint, you should wait for a day
before the second coat.
Before you get on with the job of epoxy floors
incorporation, one vital thing that you have to consider is the type of epoxy
paint that you are going to use for epoxy flooring of your garage. There are
chiefly three types of epoxy paints; solvent based epoxy paint, 100% solid and
water based. The first type of epoxy is the purest form of epoxy paint and it
is difficult to handle. You should steer clear of this type of epoxy and opt
between solvent-based and water=based. If you go for solvent-based epoxy you
need to ensure that there is sufficient ventilation in your garage.
Solvent-based epoxy adheres well but strong and hazardous. Water-based epoxy
paint is widely available and less hazardous as well. Regardless of which type
of epoxy paint you use, you have to apply two coats while installing epoxy
floors in your garage for increased durability and longevity. The price of
epoxy paint depends on the percentage of epoxy that epoxy paint contains.
Epoxy floors can prove to be perfect for your garage
as it can withstand car tracks, scrapping, chemicals, oil and grease.
