Should I Get A 1 Ton Split Air Conditioner Or A 1.5 Ton Split Air Conditioner?

There is no denying the fact that air conditioners are an indispensable part of life. So much so, that it is nearly impossible to imagine getting through the dreadfully hot summers and humid rainy season without an AC.

With the acceptance of ACs as the ultimate necessity of our life comes the big question: what tonnage to consider while buying an AC? This is especially true for people who fight the dilemma of choosing between a one-ton split AC and a 1.5-ton split AC. Is one-ton split AC enough for your room? Let’s find out and settle all doubts.

Understanding Tonnage System

Ton or tonnage is a cooling power rating system used in reference to ACs. It is the unit of the cooling effect produced, i.e., the amount of heat the said AC can remove from the enclosed space (it has been installed in), in an hour.  Thus, one-ton split AC removes 12,000 British Thermal Units (BTUs) of air in an hour. Tonnage is the indicator of the cooling capacity and is directly proportional to the electricity consumed by the AC unit. Now that you have an idea of what exactly 'ton' means with respect to AC units, let's move to the next persistent question.

How to determine whether a one-ton split AC or a 1.5 ton split AC is sufficient for your room?

First of all, please do understand that a lower capacity AC might definitely help you save quick bucks, but in the long run, the operational cost is going to be high. It will consume more electricity to cool your room, take a lot of time in cooling, and worse - the life span of the device would decrease with the extra load. Hence, buying an AC with the right capacity is crucial.

Sure there is a complicated formula to calculate the tonnage for your room, but we have something simpler for you that does not involve measuring your walls and floor!

1.2 Ton AC - Suitable for small sized rooms (< = 110 sq ft)
1.3 Ton to 1.7 Ton AC - Suitable for medium sized rooms (111 to 150 sq ft)
1.8Ton ACs - Suitable for large sized rooms (151 sq ft to 200 sq. ft)

Hopefully, the above information shall help you in making the right choice regarding capacity while buying your next AC.
However, if you are still unsure (or if you want to keep your options open), then we recommend you check out the Adjustable AC range from Voltas. They offer a unique flexible air conditioning concept that allows you to switch from 1.5-ton usage to 1-ton usage! So, if you have more people in your room, or if the day is super hot, you can bring in more cooling power into your room while still keeping costs and power consumption low. Sounds cool, doesn’t it?
