Short-Stretch vs. Long-Stretch Bandages

by Dynamix Group Writer

Different bandaging systems affect the venous and arterial systems differently. These effects are related to the resting and working pressures which are described as containment and recoil. Wound healing is much more than simple wound assessment and treatment. As a wound care clinician, it’s important for you the difference between long-stretch and short-stretch bandaging systems so that the right choice can be made for your patient. It is also crucial to understand the concepts of recoil, extensibility and pressures associated with crepe bandages and others that exist in the market. Below mentioned are a few details that would give you a wider understanding of the bandaging principles required to effectively treat wounds:

Extensibility: The maximum amount a bandage can stretch is known as extensibility. For a bandage which is 3 meter in length and possesses 100% extensibility, the maximum stretching capacity would be 6 meters.

Recoil: A bandage’s ability to get back to its normal position when released after a stretch is known as recoil. Ideally, the bandage should get back to its original length. All good quality bandages purchased from reputed brands such as Ethicon get back to their original length when released.

Working and Resting Pressure: Working pressure is the pressure applied by a bandage on a limb in its active state (walking, standing, etc.). On the contrary, the bandage pressure on a limb when it is in an inactive state is known as resting pressure.

Benefits offered by bandages:

·         Ideal for those who cannot wear compression garments.

·         Reduction in swelling with the help of intense therapy sessions.

·         Helps control swelling symptoms in patients with complex medical issues.

Also known as elastic bandages, long stretch bandages consist of elastic yarn that extends their ability to stretch beyond 100% of its initial length. They boast of smooth application and easily conform to the body’s contour.  Short stretch bandages, on the other hand, are composed of cotton fibers that are interwoven which enable it to extend by 60% at the time of usage. They are ideal for situations where high working pressure is required as they ensure smooth lymphatic draining and venous flow.

In terms of extensibility, short stretch bandages are constructed out of 100% breathable cotton. They are woven in a way that interlocks the fibers and ensures higher compression.  Given the fact that they are easily washable and reusable,  short crepe bandage prices easily overcome its benefits. They are most commonly used for vascular insufficiency including venous edema, post-traumatic swelling and lymphedema. They also assist in pumping blood towards the heart.  Long stretch bandages possess high extensibility and recoil. They are most commonly used to offer support and relief to ligaments, tendons, and muscles.

Whether you planning to go for Ethicon sutures or require the most appropriate bandage for your condition, consulting a good doctor is a must to ensure the best possible treatment.
