Europe is Struggling to Control Migrant Crisis Which is Deepening Every Passing Day, Leaving Continent’s Biggest Frontier Vulnerable

The number of mysterious voyages, bogus shipping logs, smuggling and unusual coastal stop-offs are increasing across the Atlantic and Mediterranean for ships passing through European ports, a new data highlights the extent. These ships also smuggle sea cargo to Caribbean, China and other countries of the world.

Cargo Ship

EU has an approximately 70,000km of coastline and the lack of any comprehensive tracking system for shipments and cargos through EU ports, organised criminals have long exploited this deficiency. Now the biggest threat is that it is becoming irresistible to terrorists, European security officials said in a statement.

EUROPIAN PORTS

With every passing day the number of ships using flags of convenience is rising alarmingly, in the last month alone, out of 9,000 cargo ships that passed through European waters 5,500 used those flags.

An Israeli maritime intelligence company, Windward, is collecting shipping data from public and proprietary sources and to identify suspicious or unusual activities, it uses algorithms. “Some countries have pretty good customs operations, but we’re talking about having to monitor hundreds of ports and co-ordinate across them. The reality is that most of the time we are relying on what the ship’s captain is telling us,” said a senior European counter terrorism official.

After September 11, with the International Ship and Port Security Code maritime security standards were strengthened considerably. Although the code requires port authorities to have thorough measures and security plans in place. Mr Northwood said that “in principle it is stringent but in practice, it’s only as good as the people who are applying it, there is very little or no oversight.”

EUROPIAN SECURITY

Ami Daniel is the chief executive of Windward and she said that “something more is needed, at the moment, the sea is a backdoor into Europe and unless there is clear intelligence or a tip off, most of these vessels are never inspected or intercepted. We are getting to a point where this is going to cause problems… arms, drugs and people are all coming over unchecked.” Cargo to Caribbean offers best, reliable and legitimate freight forwarding to Caribbean from UK at cheap prices.
