Sherwani Trends for 2022 Men’s Indian Ethnic Wear Trends

by Vikram Sharma Textile designer

Hello, there! Sherwanis, bandhgalas, suits, and tuxedos make up the majority of men's fashion, but they don't have to be identical. Every season, new trends emerge, breaking the monotony of men's fashion. Similarly, we've noticed some really cool men's fashion trends this season that we'd like to share with you.

Whether your best friend is getting married or your uncle is having a grihapravesh, the sherwanis neatly stacked in a quiet corner of your wardrobe will come to your rescue! Sherwanis are a versatile outfit that can be worn for a variety of occasions, including big Indian weddings, intimate family gatherings, parties, and ceremonies.

Choosing the right sherwani over a cotton vest for you can be difficult, but don't worry! We are here to assist you. We rounded up the top new trends in this article after scrolling through the latest designer menswear collections of top Indian fashion designers. Bold prints, broad dupattas, frock-style sherwanis, and much more were among the items on display. Why wait? Discover the most popular sherwani styles for various occasions.

1. Shawl-like Dupatta

Sherwanis with dupatta aren't exactly new, but what is? Sherwanis with broad shawl-like dupattas! The dominance of shawl-like dupattas in the majority of menswear designer collections has led us to include it in our top sherwani trends for 2022.

We've seen a variety of shawl-like dupatta designs that we've enjoyed exploring. We saw dupattas with contrasting borders in both solid and multicoloured colours. Zari work and embroidery are used to embellish the varying width borders. The borders contrast plain stoles and are intricately decorated with linear patterns and floral motifs. We came across printed dupattas and dupattas with slight embroidery near the edges in some cases. These stoles, on the other hand, had a thinner border and less detailing.

The shawl-like dupattas are elegant and add to the overall look of the outfit. Grooms prefer embroidered dupattas with broad borders, while printed dupattas with slightly thinner borders are a good choice for parties and functions.

2. Open Jacket

The new cool is sherwanis with visibly open jackets. When sherwanis are worn with trendy jackets, the overall look is elevated. This season, we've seen a variety of jackets with wide openings paired with sherwanis. The jackets are available in a variety of sizes, and are either the same size as the sherwani or slightly longer.

3. Pastels

Pastels dominating female fashion trends is nothing new, but this year, we're seeing them dominate male fashion as well, particularly in the sherwani trends for 2022. In the designer sherwani collections, we noticed muted greens, silver, pink, grey, lilac, and mint. The pastel sherwanis were printed or embroidered in light shades such as silver, white, and gold, with brighter colours appearing only on rare occasions.

Apart from the similar embroidery, the trend also includes wearing a dupatta or jacket of the same colour. We did, however, notice contrasting dupattas. Furthermore, the pastel sherwanis were paired with light-colored pants. Pastel colours are not only a popular minimalistic trend, but they also have a calming effect.

4. Frock-Style Sherwani

Frock-style sherwanis have a narrow bodice and flare out from the waist, similar to Mughal anarkalis. This is one of the most distinctive and eye-catching sherwani trends for 2022. Frock-style sherwanis have been included in the collections of some of the most well-known designers, despite their lack of prominence in the designer collections.

This trend's majestic appearance forces us to associate it with Mughal-era kings wearing similar sherwanis. If you want to break away from your regular sherwanis with south Indian white lungi and suits for a while, opt for frock-style sherwanis! This style will stand out from the crowd.

5. Single Bold Motifs

Motifs add beauty to any garment, but choosing the right one from the plethora of motifs available in various sizes, shapes, and forms can be a herculean task. Why not go with the most popular styles? We're seeing some stunning single bold motifs on the front of the sherwani this season.

6. Asymmetric Bandhgalas

Bandhgalas are a hip-length menswear garment with a closed collar and typically long sleeves that became popular in the mid-twenties. We're seeing bandhgalas with a twist this season! Asymmetrical hems and seamless drapes, that's right. Bandhgalas in dark solid colours with contrasting or matching vests and narrow pants were seen. The bandhgalas were mostly plain with drapes and symmetry. We saw black, brown, and maroon as prominent colours for this trend. These bandhgalas look great with a matching vest and are appropriate for formal occasions or festivities.

7. Button Placket

The opening in the garment that is closed with buttons, hooks, zippers, or snaps is referred to as a placket. In our previous sherwani trend analysis, the button placket was a prominent trend, and it has made its way into the latest sherwani trends for 2022 as well. We've seen buttons used as a major design element in sherwanis by a number of designers. Regular round buttons, either the same colour as the sherwani or in a metallic shade, were the most common.

8. Belted Sherwani

Men's western wear includes belts, but what about a sherwani or a dupatta? Welcome to the new craze! This season, sherwanis with exquisite belts are a must-have.

9. Intricate Patterns

Another striking sherwani trend for 2022 is intricately adorned with zari, stone, threads, and other surface works. On the surface of the sherwanis, we can see a mix of bright coloured patterns and a monochromatic pattern. Linear patterns, bird motifs, geometrical patterns, leaves, and even floral prints have been noticed. The intricate work demonstrates excellent craftsmanship.

10. Soft Pinks

Soft pink is prevalent in the designer sherwani collections this season. Almost every designer, big and small, is experimenting with various shades of pink. We're seeing dark pinks, light pinks, and a mix of the two.

11. Royal Monochrome

Our list of the latest sherwani trends for 2022 concludes with royal monochromes. Putting aside your preference for muted pastels, experimenting with royal colours can be a refreshing change. Solid monochromatic sherwanis in royal hues like red, blue, and green with slight embellishments around the collars, decorative buttons, or broach are popular this season. These sherwanis are paired with similar coloured trousers.

Menswear fashion designers are constantly fusing and experimenting with old and new designs in order to introduce new trends to their portfolios. The frock-style sherwanis, bold prints, and belted sherwanis are all eye-catching. Today's grooms adore broad shawls like dupattas, and they are a staple of celebrity wedding attire.
