Sewage Sludge Compost as Organic Fertilizer

Sludge compost is not only a good substrate and soil additives, but also can be regarded as slow release fertilizer. Municipal sludge as composting fertilizers has a good prospect in agriculture. It can obviously improve the yield and quality of agricultural products and improve soil physical and chemical properties. Application of sludge compound fertilizer can improve the soil available nutrient level and promote the effective N and effective P content in the soil. Its effect is similar to that of the commercial compound fertilizer, and is better than that of the same nutrient fertilizer. Sludge composting fertilizer has been quite common in the United States. There are many factories using sludge as raw materials for composting to make granular fertilizer and sell goods on the market, such as "EARTHLIFE" in Philadelphia, "NITROHUMUS" in Los Angeles and so on.

By combining the sludge with some organic materials (such as straw) for composting, it reduces the water content of the sludge and solidifies the organic matter in the sludge. At the same time, it can kill almost all the eggs and bacteria in the high temperature environment. After the treatment of sludge screening, it can be sold as a nutrient soil when particle size reaches a certain standard. Because anaerobic composting process will produce a particularly unpleasant odor, organic fertilizer plant adopt aerobic composting technology. The advantages of this method are as follows. The treatment process is simple and easy to achieve. Sludge composting becomes a usable resource, to achieve the re-use of sludge. It will not cause secondary pollution to the environment. If sold as a nutrient soil, sludge composting fertilizer can generate a certain economic value.

The invention has many advantages. Adopting the aerobic fermentation technology, the microbial action (biodegradation) of the dehydrated sludge can increase organic matter degradation, ripening and kill bacteria through the aerobic fermentation process, realizing organic sludge harmlessness, volume reduction, stabilization and recycling.
