If you want to move up the search engines rankings, you know and understand the importance of using quality keywords.  Keywords and keyword phases are the words used by search engines to identify and categorize your website.  They are also the terms people enter into the search boxes to look for information on products and services that are on your website.  If you don’t have relative and strong keywords on your website, the chances aren’t high you’re being found by either.

Quality Content Most Important Factor

One point to make on the subject of keywords is while they are extremely important for a website, high quality content is even more important.  If you focus on giving your readers, what they’re looking for, they will come regardless of you having a low keyword density.  Keywords just help make the search easier.

Moderation over Gluttony

Now, too much of a good thing, can be a bad thing as well.  If you overload your pages with a glutton of keywords, Google tends to categorize you as a spammer and it drops your site in rankings.  While there is no set in stone number for keyword saturation or density levels, most professionals recommend that you stay at about 5% or less per page.  Overdoing your keywords also tends to lead to boring your readers with repeated words, so find a good balance.

Position is Everything

Effective keyword placement includes keywords in not only the body of your page but in the title as well.  It helps both the readers and search engines to decide if your site is what they are looking for when you provide clean and clear titles containing keywords appropriate for your site.  You also want to use them in your description areas as well.

Don’t Forget the Meta Tags

Another often forgotten place to add keywords is in the meta tags on your site.  Meta tags are imbedded in your HTML coding and work to give relative terms to the search engines for helping categorize your site.  Don’t forget to include them because it’s an extra area you can place keywords without running the risk of spamming; use it to your advantage.

Be Specific as Possible

When deciding what keywords and phrases to place on your site, don’t use terms that are overly broad.  Instead, pick more specific keywords and phrases that closely describe your site, products or services.  Example: the word apple is very broad and general but red delicious apple is more specific.

Broad general terms and more commonly used words are harder to be classified high up on the search engine rankings because large corporations or site owners with lots of capital have spent a fortune on those words already for their own sites.  Words that are narrower description to your page, products and services make it easier to find you.  Use the same thought process when choosing comparison and related keywords.

Take Advantage of Google

To help pick out high quality and comparable keywords, consider using Google’s free Contextual Targeting Tool.  It’s located in your Adwords account under the Tools & Analysis tab.  Just enter in your keywords or phrases and the tool will provide you with other relevant keywords.

For even more help with picking out high quality keywords, do some research by checking out your competition’s websites.  Look at their keyword placement, density and use the Google SEO site tools, once again more free tools, to help you determine what is working for your competitors.  You can use this data to your advantage to help pick your own keywords.

Set Good Goals

The goal of using good quality keywords, placement and density is to help drive traffic organically (the best type of traffic) to your website, instead of paying.  If you want to build faster and use PPC campaigns to help drive in the traffic, this same goal will help to improve the quality of your campaign and result in spending less.

Educate yourself, take advantage of Google’s many free SEO tools and your site will be organically rising to the top of the search rankings through your efforts, all while saving your money because you know the importance of properly using keywords.
