Background of Russia-Ukraine Conflict
This current affair article is about the Russia-Ukraine Conflict and its background or causes. For over a year, the Ukrainian territory has been a battlefield in a proxy war between Russia and the West. This conflict has killed thousands of Ukrainians, displaced millions, and left scars on Ukraine’s economy that will never heal. In this article, I discuss what led to the war, provide some possible solutions to these issues and offer my take on why we should care.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia started in 2013 following a trade agreement. After Ukraine declined to join the European Union, Russia responded by increasing trade tariffs on imports from Ukraine. When Ukrainians began protesting for better representation of their interests, Russia invaded the country.
Ukraine and NATO relation
Ukraine is not a member of NATO, but it does have a military cooperation agreement with the alliance. Ukraine's membership in NATO would be beneficial to both NATO and the country because it could provide stability in the region by blocking Russia from entering neighboring countries.
The conclusion of the Russia-Ukraine conflict is still unknown. A meeting between Putin, Poroshenko, and Merkel suggests that a ceasefire may not be enough.
