Rose Croix Chapter and Degree in Freemasonry
The Rose
Croix degree is the 18th degree of a Christian Order of Masonry and originated
in France in 1801 and is referred as the Ancient and Accepted Rite of
Freemasonry. This Order of Masonry comprises of thirty-three degrees and
teaches the concepts of Craft Masonry with a Christian context. For this, the
candidate must follow the Trinitarian Christian Faith and before any formal
consideration of their candidature, they are required to sign a declaration in
this regard.
The requirements to be a candidate
for Rose Croix are mentioned below:
The
candidate must have been initiated in a Lodge or Lodges under the United Grand
Lodge of England or must be authorized in the Rules of the Supreme Council.
The
candidate must have been a Master Mason for at least one full year in standing
with the Craft and has faith in Trinitarian Christianity.

The Chapter
of Rose Croix provides a deeper understanding of religion, history, ethics, and
philosophy through various complex historical degrees. These degrees can take
years to master as the challenges presented in them are numerous. For having even a basic comprehension of
these degrees and their true meaning, a thorough reading of the chapters
related to them in Morals and Dogma and in Legenda and Readings is necessary.
15th degree – Knight of the East, of
the Sword or of the Eagle
In this
degree, the fidelity to obligations and perseverance of purpose under
difficulties and discouragement is taught. The apron in this degree is of
crimson velvet and is edged in green color. It also has a bleeding head above
two crossed swords and a triangle is present in the top point to the left with
three interlaced triangles in it. The jewel consists of three concentric gold
triangles with two crossed swords inside them.
16th degree – Prince of Jerusalem
In this
degree, heroism of patience and the nobility of self-sacrifice are taught. The
apron in this degree is crimson and edged with gold and aurora color. It has a
square, delta, shield, balance and a hand of justice. The jewel consists of a
hand holding a balance in equipoise, with a sword under it having five stars
surrounding the point. Hebrew D is on the left and a Hebrew Z on the right.
17th degree – Knight of the East and
West
The
teachings of this degree are that loyalty to God is man’s primary allegiance.
The apron is in yellow satin and with crimson and gold edges and has a sword
and Tetractys on it. The jewel has a heptagon of silver and gold and also
crossed swords on a balance and a lamb on the Book of Seven Seals.
18th degree – Knight Rose Croix
The
teachings of this degree are that life and its strength come from God. The
apron is of white satin or leather and is edged with red color. It also has
skull and crossbones, a red passion cross and three red rosettes. The jewel is
a gold compass which is opened to a quarter circle. A Rose Croix is present in
between the compass with a pelican under it and an eagle on the reverse side.
