Robotic Knee Surgery

by Dr. Chang Makoplasty and Knee Replacement Singapore

Are you suffering from severe knee pain...?

One recent development for the treatment of severe knee pain due to osteroarthritis is the introduction of robotic knee surgery.

Knee replacement is a common knee surgery in Singapore for those whose knee arthritis is causing severe pain or limiting lifestyle. For this procedure, the surgeon identifies and removes the damaged cartilage and underlying bone and replaces it with metallic implants.

What makes robotic knee surgery different is that a computer based programme is also involved in the surgery.

There are 3 main systems of robotic knee surgery in use.

One is the active system, where the robot performs all tasks involved autonomously, such as cutting, measuring and insertion of the implants.

A second system of robotic knee surgery is a passive system where the programme provides additional information, the actual operation is carried out by the surgeon.

A third, semi-active system, uses computers aided guidance with the surgeon making the final decisions.

With robotic knee surgery, the surgery is more precise, and involves less unnecessary cuts. This allows for less pain, faster recover and greater patient satisfaction. With further research and development, robotic knee surgery is likely to improve in terms of efficacy and safety. It is not surprising that the frequency of this form of knee surgery in Singapore is increasing.
