A gang of female robbers are using a novel scheme to rob unsuspecting women at their homes – they slip a slightly built child through locked security gates while the occupants are held at knifepoint.
The robbers don Muslim attire – a long cloak and a scarf – and go begging at selected homes, with the child in tow, before unleashing their plan.
Nazera Kathrada, of Verulam, fell for it last week and has the scar to prove it after she told the robbers she did not have any jewellery.
She said she was struck on the face by one of the women, whose ring left a deep scratch on her right cheek.
Kathrada said the gang appeared at her door at about 8am.
“When I got there I was touched as there were these three ladies who were in full Muslim outfits, together with a child who appeared to be about six-years-old. They were begging,” she said.
Kathrada said she quickly went to her room to get some money
.
“I returned and as I gave this lady the money, she held my hand tightly and then grabbed my other hand so that my face was pressing painfully against the gate.”
Kathrada said she was shocked to see the other two women pushing the little girl through a small opening in the security gate.
“They basically forced her into my house and without saying a word, she [the girl] looked around the house and then returned with the key and handed it over to the ladies before she quietly sat down on the couch.”
Kathrada said the girl seemed unfazed by the incident.
“It was almost like she knew exactly what she was doing, and that was really worrying for me.”
She said the women entered the house and one held a knife to her neck while another disconnected the telephone.
“They demanded money and jewellery and when I said that I did not have any, she hit me with this ring.
“She took me to my room, and demanded money and hit me again,” she said.
Her 14-year-old son was asleep at the time and was locked in his bedroom by the robbers. Her four-year-old son was also asleep in another room.
Kathrada said she screamed for help.
“My four-year-old, who was in my room, woke up as I was crying and the first thing he said was, ‘stop hitting my mom’. They then locked me in the bathroom with him.”
By then her older son, used his cellphone to call his father and also pressed the panic button, which set off the alarm.
The gang ran off, taking with them a decoder, computer and cash.
“I don’t believe those women were Muslim, because we are praying now and Muslims would not behave in such a manner.
“They even took off their scarves and put them in a bag,” she said.
