Researchers Develop New Tandem Solar Cell
Solar power is becoming more popular in neighborhoods and cities across the nation—even more popular than the cheerleader with the perfect smile. However, this cheerleader’s sparkling teeth do not compare to the rays of the sun used to power homes and buildings running on clean energy.
It’s time to consider installing solar panels with the help of loans. It will be a decision you will not regret—especially with the new development of a tandem solar cell to increase the amount of absorbed sunlight.
Defining the Tandem Solar Cell
A solar cell is an electrical device designed to convert energy from a light source into usable electricity. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have spent plenty of time developing a unique kind of cell that “combines two different layers of sunlight-absorbing material in order to harvest a broader range of the sun’s energy,” reports MIT.
Through this new “tandem” solar cell, more energy can be consumed for better power—all the more reason to consider taking out loans to help install solar power.
Pervoskite Material
The newly-discovered cell uses a layer of silicon, but adds a semi-transparent layer of perovskite which has the ability to take in higher-energy particles of light. “It has advantages in terms of simplicity, because it looks and operates just like a single silicon cell,” said Jonathan Mailoa, an MIT graduate student involved in the study.
However, MIT believes there could be a small hiccup when developing tandem cells. The perovskite material degrades rapidly when exposed to open air. MIT suggests either modifying the material to improve durability or encapsulate the material to prevent air exposure. Regardless, these new cells improve the quality of usable energy.
Adding it all Together
It’s simple, right? The new tandem cell equals more sunlight which equals cleaner power. Furthermore, the installation of solar panels will supply your family with the clean energy it deserves. With the help of solar power loans, any family can make the switch to live a cleaner lifestyle.
