For many couples in Salt Lake City, the start of a new year signals the end of another holiday season. But one holiday in particular eludes many and sneaks up unexpectedly at the beginning of the year: Valentine’s Day.

FamilyShare.com cites a recent Men’s Health poll that found, “75 percent of women don’t let Valentine’s Day slip their mind.” In couples therapy, the importance of celebrating this and other relationship milestones is often reinforced.

Both men and women who forget Valentine’s Day or choose not to celebrate this and other important dates are missing out on a golden opportunity to show their loved ones how much they care. FamilyShare.com notes several tips and tricks for Salt Lake City residents to remember Valentine’s Day and other important dates in their relationships.

First and foremost, a tip often suggested in couples therapy is to keep a journal for tracking important dates, events, stories and traditions. Simply writing down your dates to preserve them will help you remember them later on.

For those who are more tech-savvy, FamilyShare.com suggests using technology to your advantage. Set reminders, create notifications and use apps to preserve important dates in your relationship.

Use calendars in your email, smart phone or at your personal desk to track, share dates and set up annual or monthly reminders.  That way, whether you’re at the office or your home in Salt Lake City, you’ll have instant access to these important dates.

Choosing to celebrate dates and holidays in your relationship may also keep you out of couples therapy. Postcresent.com explains, “While Valentine’s Day can feel overly commercial, it is important to tell our loved ones that we care. Feeling loved and appreciated is a basic human need.”

Everyone loves differently, and it is important to remember that something unimportant to you may be important to your partner. As the famous book “The Five Love Languages” has made abundantly clear, each person has different ways to express and feel love, which partners must understand to form a happy relationship.

Your girlfriend in Salt Lake City probably does not express or receive love the same way as your ex-girlfriend in Seattle, your mother or even your friends. It is important to remember that celebrating milestones often transitions to more regular displays of love and affection, regardless of your love language.

Couples therapy shows individuals how to be a part of healthy relationships. If you currently excuse (or simply forget) holidays and other important dates from your relationship, you may want to start celebrating them now to avoid heartache later.
