Reduce Your Energy Loss Using Thermacell Blinds

by Mohit J. White Hat Link Building Services

One of the biggest things you can do in order to lower your energy bills is to reduce the loss of heated air and cooled air in your home. There are a few ways you can do that, make sure you have good insulation, choose good windows, and what some do not think of, use a certain type of window hangings such as thermal blinds. The latter is the cheapest and easiest option to start with so here is a closer look at what you can achieve with the right choice of blinds.

How do you know if your blinds are energy efficient?

It is easy to know if your windows themselves are energy-efficient, there is an energy star sticker applied. But window blinds have an R-system insulating value and the ones with the higher value are the ones that are more energy-efficient. Another great example of blinds that fall into this category are thermacell blinds also known as honeycomb blinds. Average curtains, as an example, have an R-1 value and cellular blinds as mentioned have a value of R-6. You can also add things like overhangs and awnings to keep sun rays from hitting the window directly.

Making the most of your cellular blinds

Thermacell blinds will work best if you choose a light colour because that reflects the sunlight and keeps it out of the home better, but you can get them in other colours. The most layers the better when it comes to insulation so in terms of these blinds, the single layer is good, the double is better, and the triple is best! Try to lessen the gaps that are between the wall and the shades and maximise how many liners and layers there are. The design of the cells and the use of layers is far more effective at insulating than just hanging a heavy or thick material there. More conventional blinds barely stop hot less at just about 10% so they are not the best choice if that is your focus.

Think about where it is best to place them

While you could use them on all of the windows to get the best effect, there are places where they are best placed in the home. Consider the windows that get the most sunlight and place thermal blinds there. Because they get the most sunlight it will get the hottest. Block the light in West facing windows especially but also South facing can see a good amount and are worth insulating. If you have a spare bedroom that is not heated or cooled unless in use you should not worry too much about the windows there. You can also use other options along with the blinds such as reflective glass coverings, and combining them with drapes.

Conclusion

If you are looking to reduce your electricity bill (and really who isn’t in the kind of crisis we are going through right now) changing your choice of window treatments can save you money and is very easy to do. You can get all kinds of designs and styles so it will be super practical as well as looking good.
