Reconnaissance for Food Industry During the Pre-Recession Period 2021

by Maria Huges Blogger, Content Writer

Coronavirus pandemic has had an adverse effect on human lives and the economy. The lockdown imposed by governments around the world was necessary to flatten the curve, but this lockdown crashed various industries, starting with the restaurant industry. Restaurants flourish on social gatherings. The only way to stop the spread of coronavirus was to stop social gathering, and it has brought the industry to its knees, to say the least.

In many countries, restaurants are one of the largest service sectors and contribute a significant amount to the GDP. Restaurants employ hundreds and thousands of people, and during the lockdown, they lost their jobs.

Technology did help the restaurant industry in the time of the pandemic. Online food delivery apps were quite famous. These apps allowed users to order food from the comfort of their homes, and the food gets delivered at their doorsteps. However, the problem was many people were afraid to eat outside food because of the coronavirus. People wanted to be safe; that’s why they preferred home-cooked meals. Things improved a little bit when the lockdown was lifted. People were ready to order food from the online food delivery apps. It gave a much-needed boost to the restaurant business. But, it was not enough. Restaurants need consumers, online food delivery apps are helping restaurants, but foodies are not flooding the doors of restaurants. There used to be days when people had to wait for their turns to eat in a restaurant. We can’t say when things will be this god again.

It is hard to say that the restaurant industry will be able to bounce back in the foreseeable future. Now that scientists have created a vaccine of the deadly coronavirus, many countries have resumed public life with half the seating capacity to maintain social distancing.

Now, payments are completely digital, which means there is no human contact, and restaurants are maintaining hygiene and quality of service to welcome customers with social distancing norms. However, it’s hard to say that things would come back to normal at once. In China, the average dining out instances are 28. Still, Dominos is operating at 30% of its pre-coronavirus business. Since the economy is not great, it will hamper the spending power of people in the short term.

Since there was no other way, businesses adapted to life during the lockdown. Many technological advancements helped companies. Now that the lockdown is lifted, the vaccine has been created, and life is slowly coming back to normal with the social distancing regulations, businesses are hoping to be back on their feet.

Since rents are sky high and restaurants have to maintain social distancing, it will be difficult for restaurants to operate in their full glory. Many restaurants have now understood the importance of mobile apps, and many are investing in the same to increase sales. Restaurants have to postpone their expansion plans and rework their business models.

Final Words

Restaurants have suffered immensely in the lockdown. Now they are resuming business by integrating new technology like the digital menu, digital payment, etc. It will take some time for the industry to get back to normal and gain some profits.

Thanks for this article, Maria. It has captured the challenges of operating a restaurant during the lockdown and thereafter.

In Nigeria, after the lockdown, restaurants were only permitted to operate on drive-by basis; no eating in them. However, they have now been allowed to operate at half-seating capacity.

As you rightly stated, Apps have come in to assist them to take orders and deliver food to even those who had never visited them to eat. I am sure this will widen their clientele base as those who ordinarily would not drive to their shops to eat can just place their orders and take delivery of the food wherever they are.

Ultimately, for those restaurants and persons who survive the pandemic, the future is bright.
