Reasons why Students Cheat in College
Unethical practices (cheating) among college students have become a norm. Being lazy and stupid may be one of the causes why students cheat, but there are other reasons and motives. No student want to use easy ways in getting better results without any apparent reason.
Before you judge a student, go through some of the reasons
why students cheat in college.
Failure to understand lectures
Research has shown that most of the professors in colleges provide a lot of information and details that are beyond students’ understanding and processing capacities. Even if reforms have been made with the introduction of new teaching techniques and technology, lecturers present a broad variety of notes within a short period. Students quickly forget the details no matter how hard they pay attention to the lectures. Since the students are not in a position of remembering enough content necessary for success in exams, they are forced to read textbooks and other related sources before exams. Besides reading entire books and doing research, they also have assignments to do. With all this, cheating becomes inevitable even among smart and hardworking students.
Many papers to write during exams
It is evident that regular grading is essential in college since it relieves the students any pressure relating to the final exam. The only problem arises from grading the students with so many papers in one semester. Extra papers beside the main exam, adds an excessive burden to the students leading to unethical practices. Many students have been caught plagiarizing and paraphrasing contents from the internet while others with papers from online professional services just because they the excessive grading limited their time in preparing well for that paper. Procrastination and laziness can be termed as the common cause of cheating in colleges, but this issue is a bit more complicated than we think.
Being too ambitious
Cheating in college is sometimes an intentional decision of the student to get ahead. Some students are not lazy or stupid, but they have great visions and dreams about their future. They know it well they cannot achieve their future goals with poor grades. Since students find it hard to get perfect grades on every test, they are forced to cheat. One poor grade can ruin a student chance of landing an internship or even graduating.
Lack of confidence
Students lacking adequate information and skills develop a perception that they will not perform as expected. To avoid failing, they find cheating as the only alternative. They feel that they will not perform excellently in tests. Lack of confidence is attributed to inadequate preparation and complex tests. It is also a result of poor lectures and lack of adequate learning materials as and when needed.
Pressure and High competition
The current education system, as well as the job market for graduates, imposes exceptional standards that are not easily achievable. The students have to find ways of getting the high raised grades to have a chance in the competitive job market. It is the reason why most of them have decided to hire professional writers' services and to use other cheating methods during exams.
The education system itself have failed to respond to the varying capacities and interests of the students. The colleges and parents emphasis on grades and impose high expectations among the students. Some of these grades are at times unachievable. Being creative is one of the techniques of achieving these grades.
Technology and Environment
Advancement in technology in that the students have an easy and fast access to online learning materials have significantly encouraged cheating. Students doing texts with their smartphones and laptops is tempting. Assessments and tests that come with choices i.e. multiple-choice questions are also creating a conducive environment for cheating.
Colleges tolerance
Colleges are tolerant to unethical practices during tests. This is the reason why you find a student being chased away from one college due to cheating and another college takes him/her. Severe punishments are there, but the actual implementation has not taken place. Even if the punishments are in place, colleges lack strategies of detecting modern cheating techniques. If professors are not able to recognize work done by hired professional academic writer, then there is no way students will stop cheating.
