about Scottish rite Masonry
The
Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry is the most well-established
and popular Masonic rites. It is widely known among Freemasons because of its
historical connections with Knights Templar. The success of Scottish rite
hugely depends on the works of Albert Pike, 33rd degree Sovereign Grand
Inspector General. He had written various books on this subject. In one of his
works entitled Morals and Dogma, it is stated that The Supreme Council of
Freemasonry was established in the year 1801. It is the body that presides over
the Scottish rite till date.
There
were only three degrees that could be attained originally in Freemasonry. But
with the spread and popularity of this fraternity, several new orders and
degrees were initiated. These new degrees were not revealed initially to
everyone and were kept a secret. The first two degrees of the Ancient and
Accepted Scottish Rite were the Entered Apprentice and Fellow Craft Mason. The
rituals used in both of these degrees are similar to the ones used by Stone
Masons guilds. The initiation ritual of the third Master Mason degree which is
carried out to welcome new members is based on the materials handed down by the
Worshipful Masters of the 18th century. Not only the rituals but also the
secret symbols, handshakes and passwords used in the Scottish rite have been
passed down by the guilds of middle ages.
Regalia
used in Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite
The
color associated with The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite is blue. This can
be seen on Masonic aprons that comprise of blue lining as well as on other regalia
pieces. The use of color blue has been consistent till date in Freemasonry.
This speculative form of Masonry is often known as “Blue Lodge” whereas the
teachings of “Red Lodge” are based on the symbolic rebuilding of the Temple of
Solomon.
