Standing at a height of 73 meters, Qutab Minar is a tower of triumph, built in 1193 by Qutab-ud-din Aibak following the annihilation of Delhi's last Hindu kingdom. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has five distinct storey’s, each set apart by an anticipating gallery and decreases from a 15 m width at the base to simply 2.5 m at the top. The initial three stories are made of red sandstone; the fourth and fifth stories are of marble and sandstone. Qutub Minar is the tallest brick minaret in the world consisting of a spiral staircase with 379 steps. At the foot of the tower is the first mosque to be built in India, Quwwat-ul-Islam Mosque. An engraving over its eastern entryway suggests it was built on the ruins of Lal Kot which consisted of 27 Hindu and Jain temples and Qila-Rai-Pithorac. A 7 m-high iron column remains in the patio of the mosque. It is said that in the event that you can circle it with your hands while remaining with your back to it your desire will be satisfied.
