Quick Tips To Choose The Best Self-Defense Spray

by Yashi Ganguly Writer
The pepper-spray or in other words a self-protection spray is a non-lethal and non-toxic way of safeguarding yourself against an attacker and is a must when you are alone in deserted areas. Nearly everyone carries some type of a chemical irritant for his safety, yet selecting the right pepper-spray is equally important. Do not get swayed away by misleading information given by the chemical manufacturers. It is better you do your homework before you jump on to grab one from the market. Let’s delve on a few points to help you buy the right pepper-spray amongst different self-defense sprays, concentrations and sizes available in the market.
Size and capacity: The size of the unit is determined by its capacity. The sizes of pepper spray range from a half ounce to one pound units.  In simpler terms, the range only needs to be 6 to 8 feet, i.e., the distance at which most personal attacks occur. Also, consider its placement in you key chain or in your wallet and pick the size respectively.
Spray patterns:  Look for the ideal spray pattern before making a purchase decision. The first pattern which is the stream pattern allows you to target a single person in a crowd but requires aiming directly at the face.  Alternatively, better choice for an average person would be an aerosol spray or mist pattern which is like a hairspray or an insect repellent. An assaulter experiences an extreme burning sensation as soon as the spray is released into his lungs.
Nozzle access &timing:  Always have the self-protection spray in your hand and thumb on the nozzle when you walk down abandoned areas. Remember there is no point in carrying a pepper-spray if you waste time in fumbling in your wallet or unsnapping a holster. If you cannot access it in less than two seconds, you are going nowhere.
Expiration: A little care does no harm. Always shake your canister once in month and see that the active ingredients are fused with the carrier agent. Take extra precautions in replacingyour spray once it expires. Make sure you replace your canisterevery two years if it does not have an expiry date mentioned on it.
The best self -defense sprays in the world will amount to nothing until you don’t acquire the art of using it in an effective manner. In worse situations when the spray is not working for over 5 seconds, be smart enough and throw the can far away. By doing this you can pull yourself out of a situation where the attacker can possibly attack on you. Ultimately it all boils down to right pepper spray selection combined with viable strategies to defend you against any potential enemy.
