How to Configure a Linksys router?


Step 1. Test the internet connection 


First, you need to make sure your internet connection actually works. If you haven’t already, plug the cable modem directly into the back of the system and make sure you can get onto the internet. You may need to reboot the machine first.


Step 2. Connect the modem and router to the system


Attach the modem to the router and the device to the computer. The modem will connect to the device’s internet port. You will then attach the device to the system via any of the four Ethernet ports in the rear. Check the LED lights in the head of the device to confirm all of the connections are properly made. The power WLAN, Ethernet Port to PC and the Internet should be lit.


Step 3. Configure Linksys router through the web browser


You can configure your router via a web browser by typing http://192.168.1.1 and press enter. You should see the login screen. Leave the username blank and type admin ass the password and press enter. Under the setup section, make sure the router is set up to automatic configuration-DHCP. It allows the device to receive an IP address from ISP.


Step 4. Power cycle the router and modem


Now, everything is configured, you will want to power cycle everything. This is done to make sure everything has an IP address from the modem through to the PC.  To power cycle, shut down everything. Unplug the modem and device power source. Shutdown the system. Plug in the modem and wait for all green lights. Next, plug in the device and wait for a few minutes until its lights are also green. Then, boo the system. You should have an Internet connection. 


Step 5. Change the password of your router


You noticed when you set up the router, that there was a default username of nothing and a password of “admin.” Be sure to log back into the router once everything is running accurately and type in a username and change the password. If you don’t a hacker that sees you have a router could log in to the router with the default credentials.
