The background of an image is as much important as foreground. If you want to have more emphasis on focal point, try to look for a background with similar pattern or colour like a bush or sky. By this your background will get uninteresting thus, making your people in the image more prominent. One can even try framing that means it can create a doorway, which acts as a border to your subject. This will further highlight your family and will draw attention towards them making background look dull.

One of the most annoying aspect of family portrait photography is lighting. When you’re capturing photos indoor make sure to use flash of the camera. And if outdoor lighting is adequate then there is no need to use flash. However, if you are shooting in the shade then you should consider making use of flash. It has been observed that lighting tends to be appropriate at either early morning or late afternoon.

Keep in mind what kind of effect you want to attain in the final photograph and according to that position the people. By varying the placement of people in your photograph, it can add lot more interest and heighten the relationships that you may be creating in your photograph.

After taking the image make sure to check on the LCD screen of your digital camera to avoid any errors. You must take multiple shots to compensate for mistakes you may have missed. To make more emphasis on the subject you can even try editing options like cropping of image, clipping path or image masking.
