Waveplates: The optical components like waveplates are very useful in almost every industry. Waveplates transmit light, whose polarisation state is then modified without actually deviating or displacing the beam. Understanding waveplates is complicated, as it comes with different fabrications, specifications, types and applications that must be learnt to simplify the process.

There are certain specifications of waveplates that must be considered like,
Crystal Quartz- Waveplates are usually made from the material most commonly known as crystal quartz. The material separates the un-polarized light into parallel components.

Fast axis and slow axis- when light is polarized along the fast axis it experiences lower index of refraction compared to light polarized along slow axis.
Retardation- It describes the shift of the polarization component that is projected along the fast axis and the slow axis.

Multiple order waveplates- they are designed with a single crystal quartz material, they are easy to handle and relatively thick.

Zero order waveplates- The standard zero order waveplate is made with multiple crystal quartz material, positioned perpendicular to the optical axis. The True zero order waveplate is made with a single crystal quartz material, processed into a plate which is only a few microns thick for achieving the desired level of retardation.
Polarization beamsplitters: These components are used for splitting un-polarized light in two polarized parts. They are usually designed for 0 or 45 degree angles of incidence and are used in photonics instrumentation for transmitting p-polarized light as it reflects s-polarized light. The cube beamsplitters that are made by cementing two right angle prisms are best suitable for applications that require durability. The plate beamsplitters provide optimised performances when they are used with ultraviolet or infrared wavelengths.

Applications of Waveplates and Polarization Beamsplitters:

The most common application of Waveplates is rotation of the plane of polarization half-wave plate. With the use of quarter-wave plate plane-polarization can be created from circular polarization.

Optical Isolation- With the use of a quarter-wave plate in optical isolator undesired reflections can be prevented from entering the device. These devices can also use Polarization Beamsplitters along with the waveplates for this application. This will help in redirecting the light in an alternate direction without deviating or attenuating it.
Waveplates and Polarization Beamsplitters can be found in customised designs and standard designs at affordable prices in the market today. They can be purchased and used for several applications from astronomy and everything other application for absolutely any industry that requires polarized light in a waveplate for controlling polarization.
