In order to save biodiversity in and around Baner Hill, as well as the neighbouring Pashan hill, a biodiversity park is going to take shape on a proposed region which is now undergoing development in the suburbs of Pune.

Pune which was a quite city till 1990’s saw a development boom from the year 2000. Drastic changes started taking place in the suburbs of Pune like Baner and Pashan due to their nearness to the IT Park. Pashan the silent suburb of Pune conceals most of the hilly terrain of the city. That is why Baner and Pashan were selected as the most favourite areas for the deployment of a Biodiversity Park, so that these two spots will turn into places where one can breathe fresh air and stay away from the hustle bustle of the city. These hills which were targeted earlier for getting timber and other forest wealth will once again become greener.

The two developing suburbs of Pune called Baner and Pashan are beautifully separated by the Baner hills The wise people of this region were already alarmed by the growing pollution in the vicinity of these hillocks. They were given charge to save the hills from the danger of rising pollution. Some of the residents came forward as volunteers and nurtured the thought of saving this region from the dangers of pollution in the minds of people leaving in nearby region. These people created an ideal example of coming forward in order to resolve some of the common social and environmental issues and offer services voluntarily instead of blaming the government. They are ordinary people employed mostly in the IT sector but keeping some extra ordinary vision in their minds. On Sundays and other holidays they climb up the hill early in the morning and work in groups to bring back greenery on the devastated hillocks. This is actually a praiseworthy work but apart from this what is required in such issues is public education because many people from surrounding region are still involved in cutting the trees or setting fire to the grass which may destroy the remaining trees on the hills.

Since these hills of Pune suburban area are not secured or fenced the flora and fauna in this region will remain on a constant threat. So the decision of the concerned authorities to create a biodiversity park on the Baner and Pashan hills is considered as the correct step towards the protection of devastating flora and fauna. Baner hills are popular for their social and cultural activities as well as the many ancient temples, which are considered as the part of a cultural heritage of this region. Among the temples of Baner most popular is the Bhairavnath Temple where long processions are observed during the nine days festival of Navratri. Another religious extravaganza is the yearly event of “Urus” which is held here annually on the occasion of Akshaytritiya. During the development boom some of the hotels in Pune have selected Baner as their ideal location.
