Whether you’re dealing with the Stars and Stripes or the Texas state flag, you want to treat this symbol of your nation or region with the proper respect. That respect extends to properly disposing of flags when they have become worn or faded.

From Concord and Lexington to the Alamo to Afghanistan, men and women have fought and died for these symbols, making them hallowed reminders of the valor of patriots. Disrespect the flag, and you disrespect the troops. The U.S. Flag Code provides an excellent guide for disposing of American flags and vexillology experts can also help advise you on how to properly dispose of the U.S. flag and state flags.

In general, if you are disposing of a flag, follow these steps to perform the task properly:

•    Burning the flag in a respectful manner is the preferred method of disposing of a U.S. flag. It’s also good for state flags as well. When preparing to dispose of a flag, you should lower it and then fold it in the customary fashion.

•    Next, you should find an isolated spot where you can start a fire to dispose of the flag. If you’re doing it at home, be sure your local burning restrictions don’t forbid outdoor burning.

•    If everything is approved by local authorities, you should build a fire to prepare to dispose of the flag. A campfire is typically sufficient for this task. Make sure the fire is hot enough to reduce the flag to ash before burning the flag.

•    When you are ready, place the flag on the fire and let the blaze completely incinerate the flag. Many people feel that it is appropriate to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or to have a moment of silence before consigning the flag to the flames. Once the flag is incinerated, wait for the fire to extinguish and then collect the ashes of the flag. You should then respectfully bury the flag’s ashes.

•    If you’re unable to dispose of the flag properly on your own, there are a variety of civic organizations able to do it, such as the American Legion, Boy Scouts of America, etc. Enlist their help to ensure you give Old Glory a proper send off.

Once you’ve properly disposed of your flag, chances are you will be in the market to purchase another one. There are a variety of websites and stores with American flags for sale. Be sure to check the vendor and its products before choosing a new U.S. flag, Texas flag, or other flag to ensure you are getting good service and high quality products. Displaying a shoddily made flag is likely to offend patriotic Americans, so making sure you get a quality product is important.

Once you’ve purchased a new flag, properly taking care of your flag is important. Students of vexillology can help advise you on a number of flag-related topics, such as proper folding, lighting, and care for your flag, as well as the history of various state and national flags.
