Those who have to deal with a propane forklift have several safety precautions to follow, not counting the normal safety precautions that always apply to all kinds for forklifts. If you operate a propane forklift, be aware of all the requirements and always follow them to ensure those around you will not be seriously injured or killed. A lot of stress will be saved as well as a lot of money due to property damage by taking the steps below.

Normal Precautions

Propane forklifts are very similar to the other types of forklifts, but only as far as the operation and driving part. By keeping watch for the people around you, you will avoid causing injury to anyone. Make sure to use the checklist and thoroughly do your inspections without rushing through or skipping any steps. Also, during the operation of a forklift, do not get in a hurry as that is when many accidents happen, when operators hurry to finish a job. Pay close attention to all your surroundings because it is inattention and complacency that also cause many major accidents. Make sure your training is current as well as workplace safety issues so you can do your job properly. This can also lessen the consequences to your employer and yourself in case there is an incident.

Cylinder Removal

There are some things you should know and do in order that the refueling process goes safe and smooth. The first thing to do is make sure the forklift is in a safe area before changing the cylinder. Then set the parking brake, turn off the forklift, close the valve on the cylinder, then disconnect it from the forklift. Always remember to use proper lifting and handling techniques when removing the cylinder. Make sure to remove the cylinder to the proper area then get a new one.

Cylinder Installation

When the old cylinder is removed from the forklift, you can then install the new one. Upon receiving the new cylinder, completely inspect it for any leakage. Not only smell, but also listen for any leaks, and check for gouges or rust. Lift the new cylinder onto the forklift by using the correct lifting techniques, then inspect the forklifts connections before you connect the new tank. Inspect the tank again once it is connected to be positive everything is properly connected. Continue with your work as normal as soon as you are happy that all is well.

Handling Issues

If a leak is smelled or noticed, take action right away because the sooner action is taken, this will lessen the chance of causing injury or damage to personnel or property. Cut power to the forklift right then, close the propane valve, remove it and take it away from the area to a safe place outside that is far away from any sources of ignition, which may cause a fire or explosion. Place the proper tag on the tank as unserviceable and tell the proper person so the than can be handled correctly.

For most applications, a propane powered forklift is very safe to operate, but that forklift is only safe if the operator using it is safe also. Always do the right things and take the proper safety precautions at all times. See to it that your certifications are proper for use of this forklift and keep your training current. Always ensure the correct procedures and policies are followed and your work will be done right with the minimal of potential damage to personnel or property.
