Problem Solving Skills

by Siya Kapoor Content Writer
Problem solving isn’t new to you. Yet have you noticed a pattern in your approach towards it?

Whenever a situation in life calls for logical thinking and keeping your calm, you are instinctively using this inherent skill. One of the most commonly used general cognitive abilities, problem solving is an active part of our day to day life. Whenever, you aren’t doing anything reflexively and even minutest of decision making is involved, your mind treats the situation like a problem and offers a solution. However it is only in case of complex problems that you actively become aware of the solution finding process, says Monty Chadha.

Varying with the degree of complexity, nature, importance of actually finding a solution of a problem, you may think you adapt different techniques to address each one of them. But really are you doing that? Perhaps a better understanding of your own brains problem solving technique may help you spot the similarity and ultimately take control of how much time you spend on each intermediary step to determine a better solution more quickly, says Monty Chadha .

•    Identify the problem
The brainstorming process can only begin once you have determined what the underlying problem is. Ideally this step should take up the least time and you should quickly get down to actual problem solving. However, that’s rarely the case. Every problem creates an immediate and a long-term symptom and most of the time is lost in mistaking the symptom for the problem. So as soon as you find yourself in a puddle, dig deep and locate the root cause of the problem. You can also use a gap analysis method by comparing your current situation with the state you want to be in, which presents a realistic picture of what you want.

•    The root
While analysing the root of a problem may be quite useless, most problems present themselves in new light as you decrypt the root cause. Problems the causes of which are undeterminable and/or uncontrollable may get hopeless on dissecting the root, but otherwise you can find the best solution after knowing the cause.

•    Solution
Now with thorough analysis you are braced-up to know what went wrong and what the plausible solution is. You may discover there are several ways of treating an issue but the secondary results may not be what you would really want it to be. Determine the best remedial course of action out of all the possible ways.
