Privatization of Education

by Ratul Puri Marketing Consultant
Education in India has seen many swings from being a necessity of life to the status symbol. There was time when sending students to schools was not common but then time lapsed and people begin the schooling of their children. The step, which was taken to improve the overall growth of a child through sending them to schools, has now become a race to send students to the most ‘elite’ and ‘standard’ class of school.

The sliding down standard of government schools has been taken as the golden opportunity by private schools to sell education by enabling students to excel in all fields in addition to mere studies. However the Right to Education is for all and not limited to those who can afford rich

“In India, the share of private schools is 25 percent, however they enroll 40 percent of the student population. Also, these metrics remain true for rural areas, where student admission in private schools has rose from 18.7 percent in 2006 to 25.6 percent in 2011”, as stated in the report of EY-FICCI.

Why do Indian parents incline towards private schools?
The dropping down level of most of the government schools in education, infrastructure and other issues shifted the trust of parents to private schools. In the hope of seeking better quality of education and learning, parent invest huge amount of money on the schooling of their kids.

However there is another flaw has been witnessed with privatization of school and increasing inclination of parents towards private schools. They are as follows:
  • •    Extreme high fees
  • •    Increased expenditure on school accessories
  • •    More competition among private schools leading to schooling as the status symbol

Steps to Improve the Quality of Education
The scenario of education in India seems to be shaking from one point to another. After shifting their trust from government to private schools, parents do not seem to be satisfied as they are loaded with burden of school expenditures and lacking education.

We need to stand together to improve the quality of education and lend a reliable alternative:
  • •    Educate to Evolve Students
The idea of educating children should be to evolve their understanding and their view of the world.

  • •    Reaching the Minds
It is important to understand the mindset of students to make them learn in way they best can grasp concepts.

  • •    Structural but Not Compulsion Education
It is important to organize the level of education but it should not be compulsory to a student to learn which doesn’t match with his/her interest; it applies after primary education.
