Private Jet Charter
A Jet Aircraft designed for transporting small groups of people for business or similar purposes is called a private jet. You may be the travel coordinator of a corporate. Your business executives would have to travel to other companies to do business like making decisions through negotiation and closing business deals. Even travelling business class on commercial airlines would cause a lot of problems. The executives would have to travel much ahead of time for check in procedures and safety check. Most commercial airplanes are delayed and do not follow timing schedules strictly. Baggage may be missing and one will have to lose precious time. Under these difficult situations your corporate may consider buying your own private jet. If this is not financially feasible one may consider dealing with charter companies or fractional ownership of an aircraft.
Private Jet Charter companies or operators are those which own or manage private jets for multiple clients. Charter companies handle all aspects of aircraft operation and maintenance just like traditional flight departments. They are however not aligned with just one corporation. The corporation you work for may not need the aircrafts all the time. There may be lot of idle time for which costs such as maintenance are incurred. During this time it may be wise to entrust your charter company to use your aircraft to generate revenue. Thus the private jet you own are chartered for the sales of available flight time they manage. This will help pay for maintenance expenses. Maintenance services typically include on-site or mobile repair, major and minor routine inspections, trouble shooting assistance away from base, avionics installation and repair, jet engine and battery service, interior modifications and refurbishment etc.
Business aircraft may be operated under FAR 91 as private operations for business purposes of the owner. They may be operated under FAR 135 as commercial operations for business purposes of a third party. For operational flexibility purposes one common arrangement is for the aircraft’s owner to operate the aircraft under FAR 91 for its own purposes and to allow a third-party charter-manager to operate it under FAR 135 when the aircraft is needed for business purposes of third parties.
Fractional ownership
It may be difficult for a corporate to pay for the entire cost of an aircraft. Then they can go for a fractional ownership or “time share”. The corporate pays an upfront equity share for the cost of an aircraft. A partner would pay ¼ of the aircraft price if four parties are involved. This is called a “quarter share”. As far as the aircraft is concerned the partner is now an equity owner in that aircraft and can sell the equity position if needed. Fractional-ownership operations in the United States are by either FAA part 91 or part 135.
Classes of Private Jets
The business jet industry groups these jets into five loosely-defined classes.
Heavy Jets: This provides the greatest space and capabilities and is the most expensive type of private jet. Aircraft of this class include Airbus, Boeing, Embraer, Sukhoi etc.
Large Cabin Jets: Examples of this class include Bombardier Aerospace, Dassault, Gulfstream Aerospace etc.
Super mid-size jets: These jets have wide-body cabin space, high altitude capability, speed and ultra long range. Examples of this class include Bombardier Challenger 300, Citation X, Dassault Flacon 50, Legacy 600, Gulfstream G350, Hawker 4000.
Mid size jets: These are suitable for transcontinental flights and for travel with larger capacity requirements. Examples include Learjet 60 XR, Citation XLS, Gulfstream 150etc.
Light Jets: These provide access to small airports and have the speed to be an effective air travel too. Examples: Learjet 40, Citation CJ1, Phenom 300, Grob SPn.
Very Light Jets: These are defined as having a maximum take off weight of not more than 10,000 pounds. Examples: Cessna, Cirrus, Eclipse Aviation, Embraer, Epic Aircraft.
