Private Home Tutor or Tutoring Centre: Which One Should You Choose?

by Action Coaching IT

You’ve come to the conclusion that your child will need extra tuition to help them with their studies. But which do you choose? A private tutor who will come to your home or a tuition centre?

Hiring a Home Tutor in Sydney

If you choose to hire a home tutor in Sydney, that person will provide one-to-one instruction for your child at your home or other private location. The tutor may only provide instruction in a single subject, or they may offer tuition in a variety of subjects.

When hiring a private tutor in Sydney, cost is often a factor, and you may find that hiring an independent tutor is cheaper than using a dedicated tuition centre. However, also be aware that there may be fees to pay if you found your tutor through a placement agency.

Home tutors are usually flexible and more likely to be able to fit in with your schedule, plus as they usually only work with one student at a time are able to give your child their undivided attention. This is particularly helpful if your child is struggling with one aspect of a subject. And, as the tutor will be working in your home, you’ll be able to keep an eye on the progress and any potential problems.

However, you will have to ensure that you vet your tutor carefully and don’t forget to find out their experience, expertise and level of qualifications.

Choosing to Send Your Child to a Tuition Centre

Some parents prefer to send their child to a tuition centre as there will be a number of tutors who are able to offer a wide range of subjects, plus their child will have the opportunity to work and study with other students. Generally speaking, the tutors working in centres have been chosen based on their expertise and training and may have more experience in tutoring students of all ages.

It’s also likely that tutoring centres will have a good stock of textbooks and materials and that they have plenty of learning worksheets and materials that follow a structure based on the local curriculum. Furthermore, there is likely to be tutors to cover all the subjects on the curriculum. Therefore, if your child is struggling with more than one subject, it may be more beneficial to use a tutoring centre.

The Bottom Line

Your choice of tutor will very much depend on the help your child needs, your finances, convenience and whether you feel your child will respond better to one-to-one attention or from being in a more social learning environment. But whichever, you choose, be sure to check everything out carefully before you sign on the dotted line.
