Preventing Motion Sickness for your Dog
Motion sickness can be very unpleasant for humans and animals alike, and where young children tend to suffer more than adults, pups will be more likely to suffer than adult dogs. Fortunately there are ways to prevent your pup from being sick on journeys and these include both conditioning the way your dog rides in the car and medication specifically designed for the purpose.
Pups will often be sick on car journey as their ear structures are not fully developed and your animal will quickly feel off balance when traveling. Most pups will grow out of travel sickness just as babies do, but some will grow up to associate car journeys with vomiting and the problem will occur through adulthood. When you pup is travel sick he will lay still and yawn and look generally unwell. He may wine and start to drool excessively before he vomits.

Create Comfort
To prevent motion sickness in your pup, you need to make his journey as comfortable as possible, and once again like in humans this will involve making him face forwards in the car. If this task seems impossible, you can use a special doggie booster seat with harness for your pup that will ensure that he can see where he is going and is raised away from the stuffy foot well or seats. By lowering the windows just a few inches in the car a passage of fresh air will allow your dog to stay cool and it will also balance the air pressure, easing symptoms of motion sickness.
Becareful with Food
Before you set off on long journeys it is also a good idea to limit food. You may also like to give your pup a candy, like a soft jelly bean, the sugary sensation stopping the sensation of vomiting in just the same way travel sweets will in humans. If your pup has had a very bad experience in the car, then try and leave it a few weeks before you ride again and start with short trips that include breaks along the journey.
Make it Fun
Your pup will often be fearful of car journeys after a bad experience, so make sure you make riding fun and let her take along a favourite toy in the car or give her some special candies. There's a wide variety of cheap pet supplies for you to find the perfect ride along goodies for your loved one. Be sure however not to give your dog too many candies; this could lead to vomiting for other reasons and of course too much sugar is not good for any animal or child for that matter.
Medication
If these natural measures cannot alleviate the symptoms of motion sickness in your pup then you may like to try specially designed dog motion sickness medications. These medicines are available over the counter and include anti nausea drugs, phenothiazine to reduce vomiting and antihistamines that will reduce drooling and often induce sedation. Motion sickness medicines for your pup may cause your animal to feel lethargic or sleep throughout the journey, but they are perfectly safe and work in the same way as similar medications that you would give to a baby or small child.
